What kind of software issue would cause my DVD drive to not work?

Hey guys...looks like my troubles never end.

I had to replace my DVD drive AGAIN because the previous one failed. This one is a brand new Mat****a UJ-840D. The only problem is that it does not work in Windows.

I know that the drive functions, because it revs up and spins. I also know it can read info off a disc, as one of my LiveCDs and the Acronis Recovery DVD both can be boot from using this drive.

However, when I try to use the drive in Windows, the following happens:
    1) Drive spins up, sounds like it is reading...
    2) My Computer freezes, unable to pull up driver info, etc...
    3) Computer goes back to normal after I pop the tray open again, thus halting the read operation...

Any ideas? I've already uninstalled/reinstalled my drivers for both the DVD drive and the primary IDE channel...

    Ahaha!

Had to uninstall the Primary IDE Channel, the DVD Drive Driver, AND my Sata Controllers then reboot twice. Problem solved.

Good to hear. Yeah uninstalling the IDE Channels and rebooting solves a lot of problems.

Make sure you never use anything with StarForce copy protection. It's a Russian made copy protection scheme designed to destroy CD and DVD drives running pirated software. Unfortunately, it's not very well written, and legitimate users also find their drives burning out.

Deleting them is safe for 99% of notebook users. However, I remember a few weeks back that someone ended up with a big problem. It turned out that he had DTR laptop with a RAID hardware controller with its own driver that has to be installed early in the Windows installation.
