I would guess the screen utilizes around 50 % of power...

What laptop do you have. Different things consume different amounts of power.
-
screen and harddrive (and optical drives) and fans--anything with a motor will draw down the battery quickly

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Well, I dunno how relevant it is anymore, but a couple years ago, I came across this paper on laptop power consumption... They're using a ThinkPad R40 to do these tests, but I think the proportionate power consumption should still be similar to laptops today.
See attachment. I guarantee it's not a virus

Although that article is old, its interesting to see that the cpu is the most power hungry. Then gpu, then screen, hard drive. etc.
-
not sure that still applies with a modern processor that was designed for laptop use. The old Pentium Ms were better than desktop Pentiums, but they were power pigs compared to today's processors

According to Microsoft, the screen contributes to almost 50% of power consumption. I'll dig up the article.

This is not true at least in my laptop. The screen I find only draws 10 Watts of power from my 35 Watt Idle.
-
I think we can conclude the screen draws the most power though of all the components.

Screen, screen, screen
cheers ...
