Depends on what you want to do - guess what I don't have a peer to peer related software on my laptop - why would I need it anyway?

Some people need a Spyder3 (I have use for one - photo editing) - the average user doesn't.

The best rule is - instal as little as possible - and only add software when you actively need it.

On that note - most people will need some form of office suite - maybe you'll prefer Firefox over Internet Explorer - and Microsoft Security Essentials would be a good choice against malware.

Audio/Video Players - if you find videos that you cannot play on Vista or Win7 there is the "Vista Codec pack" or "Win7 Codec Pack" - only instal them if you find Windows Media Player doesn't want to play a file.

talking about torrents and peer to peer is against forum rules so we will pass on that one.
most importantly is a antivirus software. free or pro its upto you. ie. avast, avira, avg, windows security essentials all do free versions and give you the basics but do a grand job on their own.
firewall if your not using windows inbuilt.
cc cleaner and spybot or any of the malware/spyware cleaners.
    photo editor like picasa.

7zip, VLC, uTorrent (BTW AFAIK, this is not illegal since there are plenty of legal uses, discussing illegal uses is not allowed on the forums), Digsby if you use IM (make sure you don't install the adware), IMGBurn for burning discs

The free software thread is your friend

Basically, programs to carry out essential tasks, that you do

    For example
Firefox, for a better browsing experience and more add-ons
I use K-Lite codec pack + GomPlayer for videos
    GIMP for photo-editing, graphic work
Ms Office or Open Office for a free alternative
CCleaner for cleaning out junk from your computer
    Skype/WLM if you use them
Also WinRAR or 7-zip (this is free and better IMO but I use both

As mentioned above it comes down to what you would like to do
It also depends on personal preference since different people prefer different programs that do the same thing
Most programs mentioned till now are great, you won't go wrong with them

    Hope this helps

Avira, 7zip, OpenOffice, Pidgin, Sumatra PDF, VLC, Audacity, Songbird, CDex, EasyTag, InfraRecorder, MBAM, HandBrake, Cygwin, Vim, Hulu Desktop, KeePass, Firefox, Thunderbird, VirtualBox, and WinCDEmu.

Oh and I think Avira and Hulu Desktop are the only softwares in this list which aren't open source.
