    Anti-virus
    Anti-spyware
    Browsing
    Video
    Music
    Pictures
    Instant Messaging
    etc.. etc...

Can we sort of compile a list of most popular for each type? It would be good to have a reference... so people can see which software is highly recommended

opera 9.0 (best browser ever, i don't care what ppl say about firefox, and yes, i tried it)
    avgfree antivirus.
acdsee picture viewer/editor - excellent program, especially if you like to read manga on your comp.
bsplayer/media player classic. frankly, the Combined Community Codec Pack (google it.) is awesome, will play all available video formats, (with subs, multi sound tracks, whutevah.) and comes with media player classic. if you don't have this, you should. (btw, i Hate codec packs, i went through HECK with some of them, and trust me. this one rocks.)
    hmmmmmmmmmmm. what else?
sid meier's alpha centauri - good time killer.
if i think of more, guess i'll add it to the list.

My list is pretty much same as above (Avast, Spybot, Firefox, etc.). But most efficient time waster? I have to agree on good ol' Sid Meier -- Civilization 3 and Pirates of the Carribean. haven't tried Civ4 yet, maybe after I buy my new computer.
