So every once in awhile, ( oh no,an intermitant problem.)when the wife logs on, this icon shows up in the upper left corner.

It superimposes over desktop shortcuts and whatever software is run. If you try to click it, nothing happens. I'm unable to eliminate it with the task manager, or through the control panel, mainly cus I have no clue what the heck it is! Does anybody know what this thing is, and how to get rid of it.

    Notebook make and model?

IMO, it looks like wireless settings.

It's called Wireless console. Program that manages your wireless and (possibly) your bluetooth hardware. IE turning them on or off. Not sure why it would randomly come up and stay there, is your laptop by any chance Asus?

    Maybe try Asus' support website

    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

search for your laptop and look for the Wireless console download. Uninstall your current one and reinstall what you downloaded. I know this is a very generic fix, but I'm sure someone else might come up with a better solution.

Thought so. Control Panel > Uninstall Programs > Wireless Console

You don't need it. It's a useless application that I have never used in the many months of owning my G73. Heck, I didn't even bother reinstalling it when I reformatted.
