I just went and bought a DVD-R and tried backing up my new laptop and it gave me an error asking me to put in a CD/DVD. Did I buy the wrong type blank DVD?

Depends on your drive. There are DVD+R and DVD-R discs. -R is more common, so it should have worked. Perhaps you got an RW? Does the drive itself support DVD burning, or only CD? I've seen some older drives that read DVDs but only burn CDs

I have a LightScribeSuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RWw/DblLyr and tried using a DVD-R 16X but gives me an error asking me to use a removable drive (i.e. blank disc or external HD)

Does the 16X make a difference?

No, the 16x won't make a difference, the burner will just write at 8x instead. Are you sure you only tried to burn it once?

I used 8X DVD+R Gold Sony Archival. I want my copy to Last a long time. Its better quality than the disks Microsoft ships.

Ritek gets good marks for optical media (and flash memory). They make something like 30% of the branded (memorex, verbatim, etc) that comes out of China.
