Just curious, what specs would a computer need to score 10 on the vista experience chart?

You can't score 10 on WEI without manually modifying your Vista WEI file. The highest you can get on a normal basis is 5.9 and there are quite a few systems out there than can rack up 5.9 on each and every category, albeit usually desktops. Not that you should care because WEI is not a terribly accurate indicator of anything, not to mention a poor benchmark program.

You can't score 10 even if you did modify the xml file. Max score possible is 9.9, otherwise it returns a blank.

It's not accurate at all, for example on my Toshiba laptop, stock RAM gave a score of 4.8 and I switched it with my 2GB RAM from my Hp laptop which had a score of 5.9 on the machine itself, it still came up with a score of 4.8 when i did the re-test.
I then changed it to 4GB of Crucial RAM, and it still gives 4.8. Might be the fact that I have 1GB of Intel Turbo Memory in the machine, but i'm not sure if that affects it or not?

Not to fool us but to let people know how their expensive Hardware is rendered useless by Laggy Vista.

Vista does work Worse on Same hardware as XP..mainly due to Aero

the 2.5 Ghz Intel C2D on my Dads VAIO runs like junk on Vista business.

put that on XP and u have a Horse.

EDIT: but i think its a rare problem

with Great tweaking the problem can be reduced.

    Lithus a.k.a Vista Fanboy.... Happy?

^LOL. I can't believe people are still spewing this BS.

I invite anyone over to tell me that my computer is slow.

EDIT: Other than bloatware removal, no tweaking is required

Vista runs well right after the install, and only gets better after indexing is done.

My 1.9GHz TL-58 handles Vista quite well with a bloatware-free install, even though my WEI score of 2.7 is quite laughable......

According to how MS sees it, a 2.7 isn't laughable. A 1.0 is supposed to be minimum for running Vista without Aero. A 2.0 is supposed to be good enough to run Vista with the flash turned on, but not particularly fast. A 3.0 is supposed to run Vista with flash at good speed. A 4.0 is a power user notebook, while a 5.0+ is supposed to be ultra high-end. http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/pages/458117.aspx

Yeah, WEI is far from perfect, but it is far better (from a novice user perspective) than having to figure out exactly where every piece of hardware in your PC puts you. WEI is not designed to be a diagnostic tool for power users, it is supposed to be a quick, ballpark estimate for novice users. I'm not saying it is great, but that doesn't mean it should be chocked up as useless. It serves the role is was meant to play pretty well.

QFT. Vista is ultra snappy for me, it also feels faster than XP (I had a dual-boot set-up but have since gone vista only).

    sitting with Asus G1 & 8600 GT.

i am talking about average user who buys normal laptop.

Who sounds like a [Edit: Please don't call other members abusive names] now?

    Lol.

Now try running XP on your comp and WITH bloatware & WITHOUT tweaking.

i am not supporting XP but just talking about RAW performance.

and this is not Vista bashing like u bash XP.

Vista with Little more useful features is a Lot more slower.

and even a Random guy walking on the street can tell u that.

be it 80 yr old or 8 year old kid

    1. Guess who sold "normal" laptops to "average" users for 3 years? I had to feed myself in college.

    2. Guess what operating system I used before Vista.

    3. Guess how many laptops I've owned.

Get off your high horse and stop thinking you know anything about me or the two operating systems. Why the HELL would I bash XP? Find 1 out of my 6000+ posts where I badmouth XP - I challenge you to do that. XP is pretty much the perfect operating system, and that's why Microsoft is having such a hard time topping it. XP will get 2-3 more FPS on an intensive game, but if you think that Vista is a "lot more slower", I'll invite you to use my computer any day.

Everyone who says you can't get a 10 is wrong. Microsoft said that WEI top score would increase as technology gets better. 5.9 will not stay the top score forever.

It may be updated over time via a hotfix, but right now 9.9 is the cap when you edit the XML file in WinSAT/DataStore.........

From what I recall from the days back when Vista was still on the horizon, WEI was targeted at being a 10 point scale, but they wanted to ensure it would have legs, so they didn't make top hardware at release time 10. It actually can be used to give a sense of how long they saw the lifecycle for Vista (or at least WEI) being. Given the current trend in how quickly they are increasing the top score (is it every 12 or 18 months? something like that), you can tell how far out a score of 10 is.

I just replaced XP64 on my Penryn 2.5ghz laptop with Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 and it runs fine. 3DMark06 is within 1% of XP64's score, Aero seems to move fast and I notice no slowdowns. Maybe your dad's VAIO has some other issue. What kind of video chipset does it have?

    Edit: I get a WEI of 5.1.
