Speaking of which, what's the generally recommended as the best app of this sort? In essence, one that provides all the necessary, aforementioned info but doesn't hog down the system. I'm looking at Windows 7 btw (Its native widget support is no more, right?).

The Desktop widgets are not dead. MS just recommends you don't use them. I don't listen to Micro$haft I do what I want with my PC.
Here are a few you can try, if you have trouble downloading, let me know I'll upload them for you somewhere because I wasn't able to download from the below links for some reasons, maybe server down, but I have the same versions mentioned which are the latest:
All CPU Meter
GPU Meter
Drives Meter
Network Meter

Yea they stated for security reasons, which seemed odd because they could have probably just patched it up somehow. But leave it to them to not want to do anymore for Win7 to try to make people jump ship to their "next great OS." Their ramblings don't phase me either, I was just curious. I removed the widgets access from my system anyway to gain some drive space. Every little helps right
? Regardless, I'd like to hear what widget-like, status apps of this sort most people use or most recommend.

ooops, not keeping this, always stays in the taskbar so it's not a real gadget, sort of like the older Turbo Boost v2 which stays in the taskbar. v1 was the best it was a real gadget that never sits in your taskbar

Try running it as Vista in compatibility mode, I use to do that to make skype desktop to go to the task bar, it might work.

Aida64 looks great but from my quick search, am I right in concluding that it's not free? I only see a 30 day-trial version, otherwise $30+ for a license
. Or am I missing something/link?
If only priced as so, is there a program with desktop sensors like it for free? -

... But it is a very good software ... Just wait for any deal and get yourself a copy ... It is worth it

From my experience the Aida64 gives DPC spikes (DPC latency checker) on Win7, similar to that Compal EC from HWInfo types...
What was the name of this app?
