I'm attempting track down the reason for an unexplained increase in W7 Ultimate OS disk space. The increase happens while the computer is at rest (not sleep), no user input & no programs running. Here's the background. I reverted to a previous image just before going to bed. Noted disk size after re-image completed and turned off LCD. Woke up and before any changes compared disk size and found the image size had grown > 600MB??? (602MB)

Now please note that this image has the following disabled: System Restore, Hibernation, W7 Update & Pagefile. So, you see how I find it surprising the disk space magically increases overnight.

After comparing the current OS disk to the actual image (mounted in Macrium Reflect) via WinDirStat, it becomes apparent that the .NET Framework folders are the culprit. See pics below:

Searching the web for an explanation has not been helpful. Can someone help explain what is causing this increase? Is it a normal background windows process? I don't believe it is, so I would like to find a solution to stop it. Thanks in advance ;)

I know the .net framework likes to compile stuff after its initial installation while the PC idles, but it shouldn't be an ongoing thing.

That I could understand. Yet this is a re-image not a re-install. And the increase of more than 60%!

Have you given it more time?

On that note - 32Bit here, 640 & 346 MB for the two net framework folders, I wouldn't worry about it.

Detlev - Yes, it has now been 3 days. During this time I haven't added or deleted any programs or drivers and the size remains 1,555,172,259 bytes.

I won't worry about it, although I would like to find out the explanation for this magical & quite large increase.

-> my guess from that earlier post is, that maybe you created an image then before it finished what it wanted to do?
