So I just bought an HP dv6000t and I am experiencing quite a bit of skipping when I try to play music through my headphones as well as the speakers. I have tried various programs such as Itunes and Windows Media player, but that makes no difference. Would a sound card be what I need, or what? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Specs of dv6000t
    T7200 (2.0ghz) processor
    1GB ram
    80GB hard drive
    XP Professional
    NVIDIA geforce 7400 graphics card
    stock sound card

that's not right at all... you don't need an accessory, this shouldn't be happening. does it happen through the built-in laptop speakers too, or only when attached to headphones/external speakers? basically, i'd guess your sound card is bad, which means you need a warranty repair.

Perhaps you need to update your codecs.

I would suggest you look at all the program running in the background on your computer (Ctrl + Alt + Del) will provide a list of active programs.

Look at the resources column and try to spot all process running at above 0%

some of those background process are processor heavy.

Some Anti-Virus software will bring the fastest processor to it's knees (Norton!).

The skipping is usually a sign that something is hogging system resources while it should not.

    Merry Christmas

Ok guys thanks for all the input..I ended up emailing HP support yesterday and they resolved the problem so for anyone else with this problem, give this a try...

Step II : Adjust Hardware acceleration.
    -----
To resolve the problem, I recommend you try adjusting the hardware
acceleration and enabling DMA. I suggest you perform the next set of
troubleshooting steps, if the one steps of steps does not work.

You may experience stutter, echo, or distorted sound on the Pavilion if
the hardware acceleration is not set correctly. To experience good
audio quality, adjust the hardware acceleration slider for speaker in
the Device Manger by following these steps:

    1. Click Start and then Control Panel.
    2. Click Sounds and Audio Devices.
    3. Under Speaker settings, click Advanced.
    4. Click the Performance tab.
    5. Change the Hardware Acceleration slider's position.

NOTE: The slider can be positioned from "none" to "full" depending on
    the usage.

    6. Click Apply and OK.

Repeat steps 5 & 6 till you get optimum audio performance.

At optimal level, sound will be clear and free from static or echo.

And by the way, I do have the preinstalled Norton software, which I hear is impossible to remove, so now that its already on there should I just stick with it.

    Thanks again guys

Thanks for posting all that helpful information, and I'm glad to see it was fixed. I always liked HP support when I had a Pavilion.
Well, if you paid for the subscription, then stick with it, but if it is just a trial, then get rid of it and uninstall one of the many free antivirus applications available - take a look at our software forum.

Alright I didn't pay for the Norton, but I activated the 60 day trial. Should I wait for the trial to end or just install AVG now? Also, any advice on getting rid of norton (i haven't tried yet, but ive heard its a hassle).

I'll move this thread to the software forum and rename it for you, you'll get better responses there.
