let me know... i'd like to try one out

Linux, although if you're asking you should probably just try WinXP x64. You'll want more than 512 megs of ram though.
There aren't too many 64bit programs for windows though, so everything will be running in it's 32bit emulation layer. -
why does xp64 need more memory than the 32 bit version?

I don't think it necessarily NEEDS more, I just found that doing the same stuff and running the same things you'd run on 32bit XP ends up using a lot more ram. It's probably due to that whole 32bit emulation layer having to run for every 32bit program. But just doing normal stuff I found my XP 64bit install using around 400 megs of ram when normal XP would be around 200 or so. Also I tested it with 512 megs of ram just to see how it would run and I found it ended up using that up and paging out a lot quicker then a plain 32bit install would.

Linux, for sure.
Do some research on which distro would work best for you...
I agree that WinXP 64-bit is a good place to start, though. -
i tried ubuntu but it needs some tweaking to run on my system... it hangs on the splash screen

That's the problem with Linux in general... it needs some tweaking to run exactly the way you want it to. (Most people who run Linux are tweakers to begin with... so usually that's not too much of a problem)
What's the favored 64bit os here?
