I need to transfer some music and pictures from one XPS 17 to the other before I have to send my original system back to dell.
I have attempted to open Windows Easy Transfer multiple times on my old system but it keeps "encountering a fatal error."
Whats the best way to do this guys?
Thanks.

crtl+a, ctrl+c, ctrl-v.
Use external hard drive, usb drive or you could transfer files over lan / wlan to shared folder. -
I guess I need to take a trip to the store in the morning. -
Worst case, if you're in a hurry to do this, and if you want to avoid any unnecessary $$$ slipping out of your pocket at the store, then just upload your files into your personal folder on Skydrive or similar (if you have one; and assuming the files / folders aren't huge; and provided you have a good internet connection that wouldn't take ages for the upload and download) and then download it back in the 'other' computer..

modern laptop all has network, modern home usually has router. just plug to the router(wired or wireless) then copy and paste via network.
-
-
Then why not use said network?
-
why not just stick the hard drive in the 2nd slot and copy it over?
-
Drag and drop.
Like the good ol' days -
A networked image. Connect both laptops to your home network using a wired connection. Get some software, like Acronis, to image the OS partition. Manually backup your personal files, assuming that they are in a separate partition/drive. Otherwise, include your personal files in the image. The image/files should be stored on your new Dell over your home network.
Boot your new Dell with Acronis and restore from the image.
I am assuming you are using the OEM version of Windows. In that case, the activation should carry over and if it does not, you can entire the license key included with the new Dell. If it is not the OEM version, then even then your own license should work fine and should not require you to reactivate.
Whats the best way for my to transfer media?
