If the hard drive is wiped before installing, how does it recognize Vista was on the computer?
Is a key asked for?

It doesn't need Vista or any other OS on your HDD to install. I installed W7 Ultimate (upgrade edition) on a clean HDD. Although you'll need to rearm the OS to activate it.

Would I notice a difference if I used Secure Erase to wipe my hard drive versus just formatting the hard drive?

WOW so there really is NO need for a FULL version then.
Awesome.
When doing a clean install with an upgrade disk...
