Whenever I close the screen of my HP laptop and then open back up again to see the screen as exactly as it was before, many times the screen doesn't return and it is blacked out, and no amount of tinkering with the keyboard brings it back, so that I have to forcibly turn off the computer and re-boot it. Solution?

sounds like its gone into sleep mode or hibernation.
does HP have shortcut keys? clevo has Fn + F4 for sleep toggle.
check out your power options. click on battery in taskbar > more power options > chose what closing lid does on left hand side. see what that is set to. -

If it's intermittent, then it's probably hardware related. I know a person that owns a DV series Pavilion laptop, and from time to time, when raising the lid after the unit has gone into sleep mode from shutting it, it won't wake right away. The fans spin up, the lights come on, but no display.
She usually gives it up to 5 minutes and it will [sometimes] come on.
Can you hear your fans spin? Or do any indicator lights come on at least when you open the lid? -
Maybe it's an HP laptop problem. Yes I can hear the fans spin. Waiting 5 minutes is way too long time. What laptop brands doesn't have this problem? I think I might have had this problem with Toshiba laptop that I had before but not as frequently as the HP.

never heard of it on clevo laptops.
i had a similar problem on alienware with hibernate. only way i could get it back on was to remove the cmos battery.
first thing i do now when i get a new laptop is delete the 2.2gb hibernate file in cleanup so i never have to go through that again. -

Alas, I think it's poor power management - and on a hardware level. Toshiba and HP seem to have similar issues (I wonder if they use similar/identical parts for their motherboards?).
I'm not familiar with other brands having this issue. It's an item-by-item basis, really. -
Hmm, to me toshiba and HP were the only cheap laptops at best buy worth buying... Is there a better option?

Well, I have no gripes with Toshiba really. I've just noticed that they have similar histories.
If you're looking for something affordable and mainstream still, then I've always had positive experience with Lenovo. You just need to bear in mind that every laptop is suspect to potential problems - whether they're per case by case basis, or they have a running history.
Whenever I close the screen of my HP laptop and then reopen it the screen doesn't come back
