Which Antivirus do you trust your machine to?

Like the topic suggests, what is protecting your computer from viruses? Do you like McAfee, Norton? No preference? Did you just extend what came inherent on the computer? Also post why you have the preference that you do?

Basically, whats on your hard drive?

McAfee here. Reasons: 1) It doesn't have activation--Norton's protection scheme was broken, such that after a certain number of reboots it would say that I had exceeded my number of "activations" and basically accused me of theft--the kicker is they couldn't find a fix for several MONTHS leaving my computer unprotected. I promptly uninstalled Norton and picked up five copies of McAfee 8.0.

2)It automatically checks for updates every 4 hours and since I'm on broadband that means two things: I don't have to remember to update my definitions and more importantly I am ALWAYS protected from the latest viruses.

3)Its never failed me.

I used to be a Norton user, but MSFT is now giving away a year of the Computer Associates product on their site, so I switched to that with my new notebook. So far so good...and you can't be live updates for free! They also have a free firewall, but I find that to be a hassle. I just try to be smart and take my chances.

I have had excellent luck with Trend-Micro. They offer a 30 free trial on line if interested. Cost of software is $40 if you wish to purchase.

 

I use Norton Anti Virus currently, switched over from McAffe, simply because McAffe has let me down several times in the past. I like Norton's update system, as well as its total sytem options. My only complaint with Norton is its graphic interface, which tends to hog the RAM, but if you have 256 or higher, it really isn't much of a problem. I'm looking into trying some other anti virus programs (such as tend micro) to see how they fair. I've also heard that the business version of Norton is great (the only difference being that they greatly scaled down the graphic interface, so as long as you know what to do, you can do it without the bells and whistles. Does anyone know any other lesser known anti-virus sytems? I want to try and compile a list to try out, as here at university virus's are fairly common place [|)]

I also use Nortons AV as a part of Systemworks. I like the one-stop shop approach to looking after my system. I also like the auto update, it means even if I forget to download the latest definitions someone is out there looking out for me and most importantly it hasn't failed me yet.[ ]

 

Norton Internet Seciurity professional. Comes with NAV and gotta love the pop-up blocker.

 

I am using the free software called "Avast Home Edition". Seems to be working great, but I'm no expert at these things. I used norton before but did not renew.

As I just bought my Noteboook less than a week ago, I cannot really comment much on how good/bad this anti-virus program. It dose have some unique features like Instant Messenging, PTP (kaaza), MIRC protection.

I used to use Norton for a long time.Untill one day my friend call me he said that his PC stop to respond ,hi had Norton Internet Security a 300MB heavy program, i uninstall and put Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro
this program found 7 viruses, so after that i put it on my pc
the only problem is that when it start to chech man your pc is working only for it.
It has very friendly interface and the update is automatic.
It's very good. I've had. NetShiel McAffe, Norton, AVG, but i thing Kaspersky is the best so far

 

Mcafee all the way. I have used both extensively, and mcafee typically detects about 10 viruses and/or adware that norton completely misses. Anyone who hasn't tried mcafee should seriously consider it, it will amaze you.

I've had the Kaspersky and must admit that it's a very good one, indeed. However, since it is Russian, it is more suited to CIS countrys (ex USSR) where specific types of viruses are most common. In Europe and in the states, however, i think Norton or McAffee would go best.

I used to use mcafee. Seemed like it slowed down my computer a LOT. I really liked their firewall though, cause I could track a potenntial hacker. Now I use norton, and I am confused if I should stay with them, since some ppl say norton misses lots of viruses. Any suggestions?

 

I use AVG Anti Virus. It is a free downloadable program. It has done everything that I would expect from an anti virus. It has a auto updater as well.
