If Vista Business seems "a bit flaky" I don't think you will find much relief in any other version.

It's not the version that's "flaky"...it's the install of it. If it's bloated and full of spyware and unnecessary crap, any OS will be "flaky". What you need to do is a clean install and it will run fine.

I've been using Vista exclusively since June 2007; seems stable to me.

    ok dokey...

pls. advise how i can achieve a File Restore to get my Vista to START again.
None of PREVIOUS START UP points seem to work..

I've been told to DE-ACTIVATE the antivirus & the system restore can work again.

I've also been told to download & use Vista Boot Pro 3.3 - how do i use this to get laptop to work again ?!

How do i get to a point in the system to De-activate the Anti virus when Vista won't REBOOT at all !!

A complete RE_INSTALL is my LAST option.

PS> There's NO RUBBISH on the laptop, as i've checked using Anti Virus.

    Thanks - Mave

When I mean rubbish, I mean extra processes and crap running in the background that's taking away your computer's resources. Of course an anti-virus isn't gonna find those...they are not viruses. But that doesn't mean their not causing your system to be slow.

And if a complete reinstall is your last option, then I guess it's not that important to you that your OS runs smoothly. Otherwise if you cared about that, you would put the complete reinstall as your absolute top priority.

You want a "non-flaky" OS, yet you put your best option to getting there dead last in the list of your priorities. Something seems flaky right there.

    Thanks.

The reason why i need to do a RESTORE is to take a copy of my some my important files.
And then i can go ahead with a fresh install !

What about a Windows Repair? I know it won't erase your AV, but maybe it would allow Windows to start and run long enough for you to clean up your system? Frankly, though, I think adinu is right: you should do a clean install. Doing so would probably be faster than cleaning up your OS or trying to sort out your current problems.

There's a couple of things you can do to get your data:
    1) use the HDD as a secondary in your desktop so you don't have to boot off it but can still access the files.
    2) create a livecd of one of the various linux distros boot it and then find and save your data to a usb key (assuming you only have 1 cd/dvd drive, otherwise you can burn cd/dvd right from linux) and transfer it to another computer.
This second method is a little more time consuming (download+burn) but cheaper (cost = 1cd, or free if you want them to ship one to you, but that would take much longer) plus you have the bonus of having tried linux :)

I'm using Vista 32 Home Premium now, and used Vista Ultimate 64 on my Acer for 7 months. I miss nothing from Ultimate to Home Premium, however the 64 bit version never blue screened on me. The 32 bit version is much easier finding drivers if you have some legacy equipment. In the future, I'll probably switch at some point to Home Premium 64 bit and call it good, probably :D

Notyou is suggesting you find an easy Linux "distro" such as Ubuntu. You download the .ISO file, burn it to a CD, and now you start the computer off the CD. It's a desktop enviroment like Windows, with a mouse and icons and stuff. You can then copy files off the hard drive like you would in Windows.

Well, might as well use Windows XP given the first post of this thread. I'm using Vista Business x64 and everything is stable.
