    I have always used a local account as I *think* that the live account will slow my lappy down

    Live account, don't notice any major slowdowns, I do get a random freeze when I've typed my password when its just booted but its random, probably waiting on my internet connection.

    I use a live account, given that I use outloook.com, skydrive, Office 2013, Windows Phone 8, etc. No slowdowns what so ever.
