As we approach the one-year mark of Vista being available to general consumers, I thought it would be interesting to see which the NBR community in general prefers - XP or Vista.

Sorry, W2K and Linux fans - for the sake of easy comparisons I'm limiting the poll to two options. Poll open for 10 days, until 17:30 GMT January 29th.

I vote for Vista. I like the feel, and there isn't anything that I have found in the past year that is just completely wrong with it. I also like the ability to use the built in handwriting recognition in Vista, which is why I switched in the first place.

Voted Vista. Came on my new laptop, i was only going to try it out temporarily to see how it went, but after a few hours I had installed everything I used previously on XP without a problem, all drivers for Vista for accessories such as Digital Camera, logitech mouse, keyboard and even my 5 year old HP Deskjet 940C where not hard to find at all! Games such as CounterStrike Source (even 1.6) didnt have a problem either, while previous posts in forums stated problems with the steam client with vista. (HP have their printer drivers pre-installed with Vista, so even less fuss!)

Therefore I have kept it since.

I'd have to say Windows XP. It was smaller, I was more familiar with it, and I could make it look better than Vista. Took up less RAM, ran all my programs fine, and Vista has buried my favorite system tools! It's now so complicated to set the System Restore size limits, and it's more complicated (than in XP) to connect to a wireless network. I haven't even set up Windows Media Player, because it's so bloated and worthless, and dominates my whole system; with Vista it has become harder to ignore the built in features I don't want.

Ok, now that the rant is over I will say that underneath it's rough exterior, there is a usable OS. I will further say that I have had no actual technical difficulties with Vista (that weren't of my own making). All my problems are with the layout.

    Final word.

    Peace.

Xp, Well.. For now, Mind you when XP first came out games worked better on windows 98 and 2000 pc's. Now games work faster on Xp than Vista. Till they release drivers for Vista... XP for the win!

    My vote is for Vista.

Sure it got off to a bumpy start, but so did XP.

Now that many updates and hotfixes have been released, everything is solid. SP1 will only buil upon that.

For me, XP is a thing of the past.

    Wireless network.... more complicated....? O_O

It took me a week to do it in XP (couldn't allow sharing, computer access from another computer, keep crashing saying "-the-xp-computer does no use valid pathname". And it took well, it was automatically done in Vista.

Connecting to a secure wireless network at least is harder in XP than Vista, but not bad so long as your manufacturer doesn't include any tools that try to make it easier (and almost never do).

File sharing wasn't bad at all for me with XP and Win98, aside from pesky firewall software (non-Windows). I just followed the wizard instructions, and after the firewall was fixed, everything worked perfectly. I wouldn't want it to be done automatically for that matter, could be a bit of a security problem.

I voted XP. Too many problems with Vista to list here, and switching to XP solved every last one of them. Compatibility, hardware not liking Vista, graphical glitches, less stability, password trouble, Vista never remembering to only display Name, Type, Date Modified, and Size only, etc. Sure hope they solve that last one in SP1 for the sake of everyone sticking with Vista who's still dealing with that!

I only use Vista on a cheap eMachines desktop to surf the Net. For that use, I have no complaints. My intent when I bought the machine, was to just erase the drive and install Linux, but instead, I just did a quick system clean up and am trying it for a while.

If I had to keep one system or the other, though, it would be XP.

Vista over this way as well. Never encountered any major problems that weren't of my own doing and its been a lot more stable for me than XP. The UI of Vista is also far easier to work and understand compared to XP in my opinion.

Vista HERE! Have it installed on both my notebooks. Not once did I get a BSOD. I think users need to be prepared with drivers before installation. I think the GUI is wayy better then the bland XP. There is a lot of functionality that XP did not have. Great tools that I am sure I will never use.. but a great and necessary update. Stable for me. Just applied SP1. I use with Office 07, some Adobe apps. I am not sure why people are having so many issues!?

Amazing OS which i am learning something new all the time.

1+ months ago, I might have said XP. But I must admit, I'm really liking Vista now. No problems to speak of, occasional annoying bug, like forgetting my folder customizations, and weird networking at times.
But it's definitely been better for me, than when XP first came to market.
I really don't boot into XP any more. :)
Mind you, it was a painful transition at first for me, but like many others have said, and I have to agree, there is no going back. :)

i like both XP and Vista. Again, the choice is only an individual preference. Personally, i deal with a lot of music apps so i need a really fast, stable OS, so XP is always my #1 choice. Vista has better interface and some new enhanced functions but it's just born into the market, therefore, a lof of issues that need to be fixed. I'm not ready for it at this time.

    Voted Vista.

The other day I went on a machine with XP on it and I forgot how 'basic' it was. The only time i've ever switched back to XP was when I was setting up my RAID array because there weren't any drivers for Vista on it.

    XP had its days though.

I hated vista. It looked cheap, it used up way too many system resources, it was challenging to use, there were too many security pop-ups, there were too many restrictions, it ALWAYS crashed, it took minutes to boot up, etc etc...
Basically it was so bad i backed up all my important stuff and degraded back to XP. It took two whole days but it was worth it to get a working computer.

chids, this is so Q1 2007 comment. We are in Q2 2008 now.

Ssystem ressources-> learn how it works and fixed
Security pops up-> disable them and fixed
Crash: dunno, maybe that was early days / not patched
Long boot time-> same as the one before.

vista has been great for me.

i believe the majority of the people who have problems with Vista are the ones who don't have the necessary hardware requirements to run it properly.

Yes! Go to dell.com/support, choose Drivers, navigate to the XPS M1330 section, switch the operating system to Windows XP, and you can get all the drivers you need. Just remember to download the Ethernet (or wireless) to a flash drive or CD before installing XP.

You'll probably have to use IE to download them as well, Dell's driver site doesn't seem to like Opera.

My calendar definitely says it's January, and that's Q1 2008. But regardless of the accuracy of our calendars, just it's been several months since a product was released doesn't mean it's flaws were fixed.

It's all about the looks, isn't it?

i've hade both, and both have run perfect for me not a single bsod, no freezing nothing. but since my computer hardware can handle vista i use it. it runs great plus i get to use vista 64 bit so thats probably the only reason i voted for vista. but both have run flawlessly for me. i have them configured the exact same way, so the only difference i see is the search bar in the start menu, and the glass look. i don't use the side bar and i turned off uac. vista has been good to me so far, so theres no point in looking back.

XP FTW. Vista has nothing worth upgrading (using the term loosely) for from XP. From the bloat, the unnecessary change in the way things are done (eg the stupid Vista Start Menu), the DRM, the poorly-designed UAC, the astounding use of RAM considering it does virtually nothing more than XP, the horrible networking and slow copying/moving of files - I could go on - why on Earth would one want to move on from the thoroughbred that is XP?

And I am continually astounded at remarks that XP ran slower than Vista on some person's hardware - I'm thinking these remarks come from people who don't know how to set up their OS's properly. I do, and on every single occasion XP makes a mockery of Vista speed-wise.

And the really sad thing (for Microsoft) is, I have clients ringing me up asking if they can retrograde their new laptops from Vista back to XP, and thanking me profusely when I hand their XP-retrograded laptops back to them, the extra cost of an XP licence and labour immaterial in comparsion to having a snappy, useable laptop. Guess it ain't only me.

Vista is only impressive insofar as that 5 years of Microsoft R&D produced what it is - amazing. Too many extended lunches methinks. Better luck with Windows 7 boys.

Edit and update: After a week using Vista, it has grown on me a bit, but again, I only use it to surf the Net and try out apps before installing on a better machine. For these purposes, it seems fast and stable. UAC has been shut down and I've done a more thorough cleaning of the system. Still like XP best, but Vista - for my very simple needs - is looking better.

Oh, and the wireless connection has been absolutely perfect. That surprises me because the connection in the XP/Ubuntu machine sitting right next to it drops out occasionally with either OS. The machines use identical Belkin wireless adapters.

Seriously with the right tweaks and disabling services, unnecessary programs that comes with Vista, it runs like XP. My laptop's always cool as long as I don't play games and do all that intensive stuff. Vista's only gonna get better. I miss XP but everything that I did in XP works perfectly fine in Vista. Some programs like Adobe CS3 works blazingly fast on Vista. I used to dual boot XP and Vista, came to the conclusion that eventually Vista>XP, I've banashed XP off of my hard drive.

    Voted XP.

Reason: I had to sell and service windows vista computers at my last job. Not fun being yelled at when vista thinks its been pirated.

I see no reason to switch to vista yet, the only major difference (to me) is the inclusion of DX10 which has shown no notable improvements over DX9 as of yet. This may change but right now thats the way I see it.
