Is there any one piece of free software that is better than all the others? I am looking for something pretty basic as far as the user interface goes... The more temps it monitors the better :)

HW Monitor is the best general-purpose one I've seen. Core Temp is very good if you want a free tool that sits in your system tray for CPU temperature monitoring.

I like Speedfan's ability to set alert points for each core, the GPU and HDD. When the temp exceeds one of these points a user defined message pops up. You can also select on of the temps to display in the system tray.

Unfortunately Speedfan doesn't work with many mobile chipsets. I have a hard time recommending it as a good notebook temp software. For desktops, however, it's wonderful.

I thought it had been updated to handle most of the mobile chipsets. I had trouble with it on my Sony FZ when I first got the machine. But latter when new versions of SpeedFan came out it worked fine. But having said that, my universe of machines in my "test" is one. ...big ol' grin...

Haha when you put it like that, my world of notebooks isn't very large (or current) either. :) I would guess that newer chipsets are now supported, while older chipsets were never bothered to be included because the few older notebooks I have lying around don't work with Speedfan.

Either way, you're right; it's worth a try. If it works, great! If not, try some other software.

Great! It's a nice, and easy application to use! :)
