Just curious, the avast home edition is free, but it says after 60 days or so you are forced to register. Does that mean pay?

Do the right thing and buy NOD32 instead, less resources way better program, and combined with Comodo (the free firewall) it's a tough nut to crack for any Windows based virus or trojan ;P

No, you don't need to pay then, just register

Wow. No one has answered the question that was posted. So I'll give you an answer. AntiVir will have the better detection rate. I don't have sources to confirm this, but just believe me. But, whenever you update you'll get a pop up with advertisements for the paid version.

I don't know the accuracy of this site's testing, but:

    Antivirus Comparatives

According to them both are very good at detecting known viruses and making false positives. PE stands out rather significantly against AVG at detecting new viruses and polymorphic viruses.

It would seem PE has the advantage.

Personally the Free version of Avast or AVG is good enough for me. But if your going to pay for any AV, then the smartest choice would be NOD32.

Avast is the best FREE on IMO.

I would call avast the best one but for those two antivir would be the best. I like avast because it's very thorough, but it's slow.

In the past i've experimented with quite a few antivirus softwares and recently downloaded the 30 day trial of nod32 and it is very good.

Out of the free ones though, Avast is the better option IMHO.

I like AVG better; less of a resource hog and updates once a day at the least

AVG doesn't update for me once a day, i have to do it manually. But AntiVir PE Classic just installs new updates every day by itself saving me the hassle. It also detects little stuff that only spybot can pick up along with a-squared free so i'd say it has better detection rates.
