If you meant about ripping DVD into different formats. I suggest using FairUse Wizard.

DVDFab HD is good one for doing what you want.

DVD Decrypter is the best one around. It's free.

As for someone who posted DVD Shrink, that's a good program but its ideal to fit a movie when burning into a DVD. So I guess its pointless to keep as a problem.

Jeremy, go with DVD Decrypter. Remember when you install it, have the mode configured to Read rather than Write.

Don't be fooled by its name :D it can also copy the entire DVD into a ISO image or you could use any DVD Burning app to Copy the DVD to a Image and mount it using DemonTools or similar.

Voila !! You Get the Exact DVD in your HDD.

I use Daemon Tools 4.31 to mount images of CD's and DVD's. The standard version (which is all 99% of people will ever need) is free. The other popular tool is Alcohol 120%; I haven't tried it since I was satisfied with Daemon right away.

My favorite DVD ripper is Magic DVD Ripper; it converts to .vob format and will copy subtitles, other languages, leave out advertisements - you choose exactly what you want copied. Only thing I'm not sure it does is compressing to a smaller size - the size of the copies I made was the same size the data was on the DVD. The trial is quite useful; the full software costs $30 IIRC.

Now as to the nothing illegal part - if you listen to the MPAA, all of the above programs (except Daemon/Alochol) are illegal. But there's no law that explicitly states they are illegal, unless you listen to the MPAA, and then the Digital Millenium Copyright Act does. But I'm sure you already know about the MPAA's stance of paying for each copy of a film (as opposed to each film), and meant illegal as in not downloading anything free that is supposed to cost money.

Good post and good/helpful replies. I was going to ask exactly the same question. I am always taking dvds to my gf's place so putting them on my laptop (which I always have with me) is so much better!

    Thanks too!

no . you don't need to convert iso into AVI , iso is cd/dvd format and it can be exact replica of your original CD/DVD

and check this out mate :D

    DVD Shrink

Please read. It's not only for shrinking DVDs, it's for backup them, too.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_Shrink

In "Reauthor" mode, the interface allows the user to choose specifically which DVD elements (Main Title, audio tracks and subtitles, and Special Features) to retain on the "shrunken" DVD; Menus are not selectable. The compression is Automatic if the Main Title only is selected, to fit it onto the selected size of DVD. If Special Features are also selected, their compression may be manually selected at the minimum possible using the Custom Ratio option, to give disk space to the Main Title.

In "Full Disk" mode, DVD Shrink allows the user to make a functionally identical backup copy without changes. Sections of the DVD, such as unwanted messages or logos/titles, can be replaced with still images, saving disk space for the Main Title. The compression can be Automatic or Manual, which allows selection of greatest compression for Menus or Special Features, saving disc space for the Main Title.

    ----
It doesn't make ISO file from DVD, it just copy DVD to your hard disk.

    First thanks for Rep :D

You can use any DVD/CD Burning software to do it (Remember to select image recorder / Hardisk in DVD Copy Mode as the target Drive )

or you can use DVD Shrink as wojwoda says :D

Thanks for the previous information. With it I was able to "rip" a DVD onto a hard drive as an "iso" file. I have not been able to figure out how or what I need to do to open/play it from it's location on the hard drive. Any suggestions?

Use DVD Decrypter in conjunction with DVD Shrink.

Decrypter to rip the DVD and Shrink to compress.

    hey guys,
i used this forum as a guide to which dvd ripper is best.
i ran into a problem today. both dvdshrink and dvd decrypter would not copy dragonball gt season 1. it just came out. ive ripped other dvds no problem and even dragonball z seasons, but GT doesnt work.

is there something i can do to get around this? or is there a program i can try?

    thanks for help
