Hi guys I am on vista 64 bit. My laptop arrived a couple of days.

Was installing all the software I need and re-booting as usual.

After a day of installing software without many re-boots I got this error message when re-booting.

"Windows has failed to start, a recent hardware or software change may have caused the problem"

"info: an error occured when attempting to read the boot configuration data"

The error is easily fixed by installing the vista disc and using the repair option, however I want to get rid of this error.

I was sure the cause was bf2142, as i had already a compatability arror with vista with this. So did a system restore til before 2142,the error disappeared so i began installing all the programs that were lost in the restore, and then the boot error came back.

So here is the main list of programs I have been using, 1 of which is causing this error:

    Firefox
    Vuze (torrent client)
    Java
    adobe flash player
    logitech desktop manager
    3d mark06
    microsoft active x
    itunes
    quicktime
    GOM media player

I think thats all the programs i was using, I hope I haven't missed any.

Basically any advice on how to find the cause of the error, or any useful suggestion would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Boot loader needs to repaired. Probably damaged from something you installed or a virus.

Do you have a Vista CD at hand?

Umm, not to be too critical or anything, but I'm pretty sure the OP knows that the bootloader needs fixing, and how to do it; rather, I think the OP wants to know why his bootloader got damaged, not whether or not it's damaged. :)

I got this error once after screwing around with Acronis True Image Home.
fixed it by just booting into last known good configuration.

Have you tried installing your list of software without the Logitech Desktop Manager?
It's known to cause trouble because of the backweb-8876480.exe part, which keeps a connection to Logitech in order to check for updates, patches etc.
It keeps listenening on a UDP and TCP port for any info...
I would not install it and only manually download any needed updates from Logitech.
This is just a suggestion though, not a final solution as I'm not sure if it's the culprit but the last email on this cnet forum page makes one wonder what Logitech software is up to.
    Cheers.

That's a good bit of advice - it's annoying as all getout when some bit of software arrogantly assumes that it's so important that it has to have special contact back home to get its own updates (not to mention opening up a potential backdoor).
