I'm sure you'll get some good suggestions for tracking software.

A step I take to protect at least the physical laptop is I use Safeware insurance.

    http://www.safeware.com/

It covers accidental damage, theft and a ton of other things pretty much anywhere in the world.

I haven't had a claim yet, but I've used them for years.

    Just another layer of protection.

Good luck with the tracking software.

The best way to keep your laptop from getting stolen is to keep it with you. Tracking software only sometimes works, it doesn't have a very high success rate. Back up your notebook data regularly to a disk you keep at home (external hard drive, flash drive, something) so that if it is stolen you don't lose your term paper. I'd suggest syncing it with your backup nightly, if not more often. And make sure your laptop is easy to pack up and move with you. Get a bluetooth/nano wireless mouse so you don't have a dongle sticking out to deal with, make sure you learn to use hibernate and sleep properly, and if you're not leaving the machine around people you trust, just hibernate it and take it with you. If you're going to be working in one place with it for more than an hour or two, a lock can give you peace of mind to go to the restroom without it ;) How does it go... an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure ;)

    truecrypt, encrypt your hard drive.

You MUST assume that your laptop will be stolen. Any plans you make have to revolve around that possibility.

But do you also encrypt your disk drive?

Data is always more important than the hardware it lives on.
