I would settle for Premium unless I see something very useful in Ultimate that would encourage me to pay more for it.

Basic is a useless version, why pay close to premium price for alot less?

Business and enterprise are catered to the corporate realm and while they do include useful features, the features can either be purchased seperately or not needed for a personal user.

Not exactly. For home and personal use i recommend Home Premium. I have Thinkpad with Vista Business and compare with my friend's laptop with Home Premium here is what i found lacking in Business :
    a. Games folder empty. You can find many games at Home Premium.
    b. I cannot play DVD movie. There is no MPEG-2 codec installed. To get it either to buy (again!) from Microsoft or use free codecs from internet. Home Premium have everything installed and ready.
    c. No media center, movie maker, etc (well, i am okay with this but worth to mention).

The only advantages that Business have over Premium is that it have Volume Shadow Copy (like restore point in XP), better networking support, full pc backup and remote desktop. These features are rarely used for average home user, even for some executives that use the laptop at office and home interchangeably.

vista also has a restore point, shadow copy is a more advanced version that is used in 2003 server. but yeah ur right about those other things, however remote desktop wouldve been useful.

Well, Windows XP Professional didn't have any built-in DVD player or Media Center either. That was Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 that's upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium.

I've only used Ultimate because i didn't want to run into a feature that might come along later (see Dreamscene) that i wanted to have. I figure pony up now for long term satisfaction ;)
