I personally like v8.5 or even 8.1 more than 2009.....
the only reason I upgraded is because of that annoying notification message that there is a newer message of msn messenger available for download.....
anyway to hide that notification?
I miss teh days og teh mess patch.....I am using the A-Patch right now but it's not as good....

I'm using 2009. Didn't like it at first, but am used to it now so all is well.
What don't you like about 2009? -
^ Me too.
After using 2009 for couple of weeks now, I must say I am liking it. It' pretty nice, IMO. -

2009 rocks. and configurable out of the box like no messenger before (so you can slim it down to it's essentials. the only thing is the advert, which can be removed with apatch as you know).
faster, looking pretty, and works great. espencially cool is the multiple systems that can connect at the same time. -
I hate the newest one so much. Im still using 8.5
Now they will force everyone to upgrade though, sadly. -
2009 i like it!

The newest.

I have been using the 2009 version since it hit the beta stage last year and have never gone back to 8.5. It doesn't make sense complaining now because they will force everyone to move to the 2009 version for security reasons come September of this year.

I like WLM. It was giving me some hassle with my Gmail for a while but apparently the latest version of the Live Essentials has an updated WLM which seems more Gmail friendly.
-
The most thing I hate is the fact that......
If I want to know the email ID of one of my contacts, I can't just hover the mouse on his name in the contact list then get a caption of his email id...... I will have to double click on his name in the contact list, click view contact, then click edit, only then would I be able to see his actual email address
8.5 was much simpler -
2009 looks nice but its really hard to use compared to 8.5
8.5 had good plug ins and patches too. -

I love the *nudging* Patch
Cin... -

I love the 2009 version with that nudging patch. I know Cin loves it as well, not to mention David secretly LOVES it! He won't shut up about his LOVE for it!!!

For some reason the newest one (2009?) kept crashing my computer all of a sudden so I had to revert back to good ol' 8.1. I prefer the newest one though
-
I just rolled back to v8.5 w/ mess patch, Plus! + Stuff Plug 3
Mail button still opens up windows live mail btw.
Much easier to use IMO plus only 8mb memory use.. I just need to find a way to disable that pop up telling me 'theres a new version'
EDIT: Okay i managed to get rid of the pop up by hacking the version info and changing it. -
v 8.5 or 8.1 never displayed the user's custom message when u hover the mouse over! -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
if it doesn't have enough space it shows to the left. and people with long messages in their nicknames should get beaten, that's what the status is for anyways
-
8.5 with a-patch, loved all the extra features it came with and also msg plus
it kept bugging me to install on win7 so I did, i'm getting used to this one now
but a-patch doesnt have as many tweaks for it =( -
-
Well, maybe it is.. I've done it a while ago too, and it does trick the version check... I wonder if they will shut down the 8.5 protocol and make it IMPOSSIBLE to sign on via it? I mean at their blog they do say that OS'es that doesnt support the newer versions can continue to use the old... So im wondering.
Ive made my 8.5 look like this, and i've had it since the beta of 8.5
and 9.0 is horrible (in my opinion ofcourse) compared -
One thing i'm not liking about 2009 is that sometimes when your recieving an IM while typing out one in another window, the program locks up for a bit until the other person is done typing and sending their IM to you. Very irritating...
-
I am completely amazed that so many of you guys are actually still using 8.5 after all of this time.
I upgraded a few people at work to the 2009 version a few months ago and very few of them hardly noticed the differences; I guess for some people as long as they can chat with friends the interface doesn't matter. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
mine looks like this right now on vista, similar on xp, only apatch for removing the ad.
-
If thats gonna happen that means all other clients like Digsby, Pidgin and E-buddy will seize to work -
davepermen, i still find it ugly...

so is yours, too
but mine fits at least the rest of the os much better, and doesn't eat up much more screen real estate => all in all, it's a gain.
finding it ugly is personal, but a real reason, it isn't. (joda speak suddenly from my side?? fun)
you can of course customize it in other ways, it's rather flexible. and flexible without fiddling in settings and all, which i think is a plus.
edit: and about the blocking the old ones.. if that means old non-existant friends don't spam me with "uhh look what pic of you i found click here http://somefunkyspamadressireallydontwanttoclick.com", i'm happy -
Well you go on an use 9.0, you are obviously fine with it, some people are not so im not sure on what the hell you are trying to do right now.

i search for reasons 9 is bad. and the only reason it looks like there is, is it's design. obviously, everytime a design changes some don't like the change, so that point is mood. all in all, the design changes got positive response, and the usability enhancements + performance enhancements + security enhancements are nice. the ui is less obtrusive by default, too, that's cool (and everyone hating UAC should agree with that
)
-
well i don't agree and im not trying to make anyone who likes 9.0, to use 8.5.
I cant find ANYTHING better with the new wlm and i dont like the user interface so isnt it obvious that im using the older version? -
It is not fair how Microsoft forces users to upgrade rather than let them choose what they prefer.
I wish there was a registry hack to stop that popup of informing u you are using an outdated version........it should really be.....
" you are using the best version of WLM, please help us spread the 09 version by uninstalling your perfect WLM 8.5" -
There is a hack maximus. You just use resource hacker to change the msmsgr.exe version ID to whatever you want then it will stop bugging you.
-
maximus, upload your msnmsgr.exe (since mine isnt orignal) and i will hack it to stop that bugging message
-
There you go... I don't know about other clients being able to login but if you are using a Microsoft messenger program it will have to be the 2009 version. -
-
Oddly enough, i don't think it's solely an underhanded way of forcing people to move to a Version of WLM they don't like...
I read closer in the blog post they created and they said that even users of earlier version of 2009 (referred to as Messenger 14 in the post) will be prompted to upgrade as well. They said that while there will be no UI or feature changes for users using earlier versions of 09, the code will be updated to the latest version to patch holes.
Sure enough, i checked my version of Messenger 14 and mine is slightly out of date. They said that users of earlier versions of 2009 will also receive notifications to upgrade in September.
I do understand the frustrations with 09, i have a few myself as previously mentioned, but in a way, if moving everyone (even current 09/messenger 14 users) to the latest version is the best way to maintain security then it's not such an "evil" idea. -
sure the retards can move on but i dont need it, those msn viruses only gets into retarded peoples computers

there's one thing holding up the whole worlds industries, and it's legacies. get rid of the old one, get the new one. it handles the same, has some improvements, and is the maintained and supported version of your old one.
if there is no real loss, there is no real loss. in win7, i have real usability losses, together with some gains. +- in equal to vista. so why should i pay for the new one? it would be useless spent money.
but for an app with a free update, i always take the new one. same with any app.
if it wouldn't be a microsoft app, you would love the new version. just as you do with all the other apps where you post "new version threads" in the forum.
Which version of WLM do you prefer?
