If you are selling a laptop, which of the two is easier to get a buyer?

    a. Laptop running on Windows 7 professoinal
    b. Laptop running on Windows XP professional + Windows 7 professional disc

Probably with Windows 7 setup already, but it would depend what notebook and where you are going to sell it.

Don't think it makes a difference :) It wouldn't make a difference to me, if buying a second hand laptop - I would buy it even without a OS if everything else is as it should be, starting with the price.

But I guess Windows 7 already installed could be an advantage to inexperienced users who just want to press the button and have an up to date machine.

My thought was, some users may prefer XP and are looking for them in the market?

Just install Windows 7. The majority of consumers have no clue what is going on with laptops and why they might prefer XP, so selling it with the latest OS already installed (no work on their part) would be more enticing.

sideway or up side down :)

seriously though, it doesn't matter. What you are thinking are kind of 'service' and you can always mentioned that in your ad(assuming craigslist or something).

Might want to check out the legality of selling or supplying an unlicensed copy of an OS...........

Downloading for personal use is one thing, doing so to somehow enhance the resale value of a piece of hardware might be something else altogether.

It is perfectly legal. The disc came with the newly bought laptop when window 7 just came out (I chose to have XP installed). It is licensed for this very machine :)

OK, so all of you suggest Windows 7. Now my laptop has some problem and will be sent for fixing (in warranty). Very likely they'll reimage it. Can I also send in the Win 7 disc to them and ask them to replace the XP by Win 7? (Do I need to send the disc, since they can probably install Win 7 for me without my disc?)

I don't think so :) And whoever is - he'll know how to install one ;)

Could you answer my question? If I want them to replace xp by Win 7, will it be OK not to send in the disc? They can install anyway?

If your machine came with XP originally, I would guess that it will come back with XP. I would not send the disk, if they already have an Win 7 image they do not need your disk. Honestly if an enthusiast buys your machine they will most likely reload the OS when they get it.

Thanks for the reply. When machine was purchased, it was configured as Windows 7 downgraded to XP, so the Windows 7 is officially its OS. The label on the bottom of the machine shows Windows 7 license, not XP. I just wonder if that's enough for them to install Win 7 for me without my having to send the disc.

It doesn't matter. Any sane user would re-install from scratch in case it was infected and to ensure it is setup right.

Kns, No Doubt, I think they would load win 7 in that case, but I would add a note when I sent it back indicating that. I agree with the consensus, Win 7 preloaded would be a better selling factor.

    Dual Boot!

Install XP on first partition, then install W7.
