You win Thomas! But doesn't the system do some kind of RAM check? So by me having 2GB and you 1GB you have an advantage?

Come on, doesn't matter, just friendly banter. If you really need an ego boost by beating someone with a boot time, you got some bigger issues.

So far, Thomas is winning by default... Lol, I don't even want to time my not-fast-enough-for-me e1505 that I have to deal with while my NP2090 ships.

    Edit:
Oooh, not anymore. Too bad. :p

What do we mean by boot? I mean, everything loaded CPU goes down to no usage or what? Not that it matters.

I counted it from the time I pressed the power button to the time that my desktop came up. Though most people who have a password will count it to the time that the password screen comes up.

Us SSD guys (just me) feel left out so...

If I boot to the password screen...16 seconds. If I go to complete boot(desktop/internet confirmed/no SSD blue light left), Im around 28 seconds but have had it at 23-24. I play different ideas, tweaks and programs daily.

Ive reinstalled my system 9 times since I received it a month ago...my own choice to test and improve. I do complete pc backup at new points closer to my complete perfectly turbo'd system.

If they gave you Vicodin give it time and take the high perscribed dose as allowed (2 every 4 hours ;) ) do not wait for the pain to come back at first take before pain. When you wait it takes 1/2 hour to 1 hour to work. This at first later maybe reduce.

Edit: elavate, this helps so much, maybe more than drugs (not).

You also need to account for the BIOS load time. Mine, for example, takes several seconds to load and execute. My laptop only takes a second or so until it loads into the Windows boot screen.

We need to reset the count time from after the BIOS screen to the time the desktop screen appears.

Can't wait until I get my Fujitsu 146GB 15000 rpm SCSI hard drive. That should probably shave some time off my boot time.. :p

Turn on my new notebook then input password then to desktop it takes 30 seconds.
I used TuneXP Ultra, Deskeeper 2007, Adware 2007, WinPatrol, and CCleaner.
I unstalled crapwares that comes with new notebook but never bother to clean install Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Is that fast enough? I hope so.

I ran a boottime test on a Sony TZ90 with SSD.

    here it is http://youtube.com/watch?v=THd0-0Alu4M

For the test I put Firefox in the folder startup. This way you can be sure the system has fully booted. From pressing power button to firefox launched within 27 seconds. ( i did not time this exactly maybe it's less)

For this test to get equal comparisons one has to take into account the differences that are caused by different bios.

It depends what you guys call boot? i know this has already been mentioned and explained... but for me it would be the time i pressed the Power button, till every icon in teh tray has loaded.

If people say until they see the desktop first time, well that hasnt really loaded has it? it still has applications to load on teh started (e.g. Antivirus etc).

    Ill test mine later.

EDIT: Started from Power button press to login, it took 47.1 seconds. From Power to all desktop tray icons loaded, 1 min 50.9 seconds.

Dang why is it so slow? i used tune XP aswell.

From selecting my OS to entering my password the laptop takes 24 seconds. There is about 4 seconds for the BIOS to boot. From entering my password, the machine then takes 25 seconds to load my taskbar and required applications.

The reason your system might be so slow Recoil would be if you are loading a lot of applications upon boot. You could try using MSCONFIG to reduce the number of programs loading on boot.

I have a 55 second boot up. Havent tweaked anything. Just did a clean install (after I tweaked so much that I messed up windows) so no more tweaking for me. Any way, Its pretty fast. I have AERO on. Installed a whole bunch of programs and still have 21gb left on my 32gb SSD drive.

    Sony Vaio TZ-191
    Windows Business
    2gb RAM
    U7600 Processor 1.2 ghz
    SSD 32gb
    Happiness

EDIT: 55 second from pressing power button to getting Wi-fi ON.

You have a 55 second boot up time with an SSD
Why is it so long? most SSD users get 20-30 second boots!

    ThomasH...

I think your are reading his (SubD) post wrong.

Its 25 seconds to the password and then another 24 seconds to the screen...thats 49 isnt it?

And 55 seconds without any tweaking or TuneXP is not bad. NOW TWEAK AND TUNEXP IT CALOT!!!

LOL, Id rather not, last time I got tweak-happy and ended up messing some stuff. Im pretty happy with the way it is right now actually. Very zippy, I have 6 Internet explorer tabs, antivirus running in the background, MSN messenger open, listening to music, downloading some stuff from limewire, and I just opened another window and it opened pretty fast. (not as fast as the first one obviously) but I could barely notice any lag.

havent done any tweaks other than clean install. TZ is a subnotebook. 11.1 inches less than 3 pounds. and my SSD is 1.8. Flamenko´s SSD is 2.5 inches. that is why. I get 6 hours battery life with everything on and brightness full. i doubt anyone else gets that.

The tweaks are not system or ssd/hd specific. They are the best of the best and alter the way Vista works.

Very least, try TuneXP...you will be glad you did.

    Start up progs-
    Avast
    Rainlender
    cfosspeed
    Last.fm Helper

Used the TweakXP startup tweak, that's pretty much it.

Does anyone here want to try something? It hasnt really increased the start time of mine but it has no mal effects either.

I downloaded a program this morning i am checking out called EasyBCD 1.7

    It is here:

    http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1

It allows you to reduce your boot time from the default 20 seconds to what you want (ie 5 seconds). It also allows you to manipulate the bootloader file on your own if your daring. I have not done this...

Just a little prg for you to try out to improve boot times though. Can someone post if they have results?

10 seconds on my new MacBook 2Ghz core2duo with 1gb ram running fully updated OS 10.4 .. It takes 12 seconds to shut it down.

I was quite shocked I have to say! I'm used to anything from 40-60 seconds (and upwards on a bad day) on my Athlon 64 X2 4200+ socket 939, 2gb ram PC with a very slightly tweaked Vista HP x64.
