    Why I don't like Windows 10

So after giving Windows 10 the benefit of the doubt and running it for 3 days, I have finally come to a conclusion that this OS is not for me as a power user but is a great option perhaps for installing it for family members who only want a PC to surf the net and not be at risk because they may not have the latest Windows updates, don't care about the weird aesthetics of the OS, etc.

Below are my reasons why I don't like and will not use Windows 10:

    1- Windows Updates!

I disabled Windows Driver Installation via Windows Update from the Device Manager options, then I ran the tool which Micro$h4ft released to show/hide updates and let it search for the updates, then I selected all the driver updates and hid them.

My system ran fine updates wise for 2 days then on the 3rd day Windows updates notified me that there is an update for the Bluetooth Adapter even though I have just installed the latest official Broadcom Bluetooth drivers from ASUS site / My motherboard's download list.

I searched for updates using the Microsoft Hide/Show updates tool but it wasn't seeing that Broadcom Driver update yet everytime I open Windows Update, it will show the Broadcom driver update ready to be installed and there is no way to hide it or get rid of it, which in turn was preventing other updates from being installed because it seems like I am forced to install this first. How did I know there are other updates? Because when I run the Microsoft Updates Hide tool it only shows a security update for Microsoft Silverlight yet I don't see that in the actual Windows updates, seems like the other update is pending installation of the driver update thrown at my face first.

ENOUGH!! I have Windows 10 Pro for the supposedly more control over my OS and having access to Group Policy Editor!!

I don't want your drivers Micro$haft leave my system running fine as I have installed/configured it for the love of God!

2- Control Panel vs PC Settings

It was already bad in Windows 8, now it's a complete joke! No matter how many times I have changed some settings, I just cannot seem to remember them and have to sit and guess where X setting is in Control Panel or PC Settings

    3- Privacy

While I know my way around things and have disabled Cortana, typing correction, etc......

I just am not happy that I have to disable 10s of things before the OS is safely useable, if you go into the PC Settings / Privacy you will see how you have to disable apps for accessing Radio (whatever that Radio means I don't know), PC Contacts, Mail, Messaging, Webcam, oh lord! seems like every Metro app has access to everything unless you go and disable literally everything in the PC Privacy.

I don't know about you, but this doesn't leave a good impression for me using an OS which has its privacy heavily compromised out of the box.

    4- Windows Updates Bandwidth Sharing

Again, I know how to disable it and did, but the idea of Micro$h4ft wanting to use people's PCs as file servers for Windows updates is just wrong wrong!! What has the world reached to!

I bet you 8 out of 10 people who buy new PCs now will be puzzled why their new PC's internet, upload, VoiP chats or what not are crippled or slow, not knowing that their PC has just been registered as an MS update server for free. Why isn't Microsoft paying us for this? The OS should be free of charge really if they want to do this IMHO.

    5- Start Menu

I thought the whole idea of Microsoft releasing the preview builds was to finally "listen to their customers", the outcome of this new Start menu means they did exactly that.

Instead of listening to what their customers have been long complaining about, they brought the Metro Design team, let them eat a few Windows 7 Start Menu Sandwiches and then had them vomit out this new crippled start menu which looks like a cartoony joke of MS taunting people saying "oh you want a start menu? Here you go MUWHAHA"

I did install Classic Shell and get around that, but now I find myself having to tweak way too many things just before this OS is useable and at the end of the day I must ask myself........what am I doing? Why am I not using Windows 7?????? Which brings me to the next and final point....

The Start Menu Should Be Sacred (But It’s Still a Disaster in Windows 10)

    6- Windows Photo Viewer

Windows photo viewer does not launch automatically when I double click any image file even though I set it as the default app.

I then did a reg trick that forces Windows Photo Viewer to be the default app but then again,
Does Microsoft expect people to go out of their way and do reg tweaks to get the basic functionality of the OS? Oh and I don't mind using the metro like Photos app, except it displays blank/black images for a lot of the files I tried opening which were mostly PNG files of benchmark screenshots I've taken, nothing too complex for their lovely Photos app. If only it worked..

7- CUDA does not work in Windows 10

Even by doing the " Restore CUDA in the latest nVIDIA Drivers" method, CUDA does NOT work in Windows 10. I realized that when I ran a few videos in MPC-HC which I have configured to use LAV/CUVID but the videos just appeared as a blank black page. At first I was puzzled as to what was going on until I tried a few other video converters like Splash Player Pro EX and Nero VIDEO and they both were acting as if CUDA was not present.

    8- DPI Scaling completely broken!

DPI Scaling on Windows 7 was ok, on Windows 8, they improved it a little bit with everything looking sharper even with a 125% display scaling on my Alienware 18's 1920x1080 resolution.

With Windows 10, they completely removed the setting in the screen resolution which basically allows you to set the same scaling level across all connected displays to the computer (not sure of the actual wording but something like this), and due to that, now when I choose a 125% DPI scaling, for some reason the normal stuff like Computer in File Explorer, the desktop, start menu, all look nice and sharp, but other things like Device Manager, Group Policy Editor, Services window, all look blurry as if I was using a non-native resolution! There is no way around this for now but to go back to a 100% DPI scaling. Imagine what that would mean for some poor fellow who just purchased a shiny new laptop with a 4K display that needs a 200% to 250% DPI scaling for things to look good! Everything would be blurry as heck! Now they have to use a 100% DPI scaling and purchase a good professional magnifier to be able to read anything on their screen!

    Example:

    Scaling Enabled:

    Scaling disabled:

10-Adding other programs to allow/disable in Firewall Settings broken

So what if I wanna add a program to the allow or disable list in Windows 10? You can no longer do that, the list of programs is empty! Thank you Micro$h4ft

    11- Performance

Maybe I am not as smart as I think I am but what I don't get is, Windows 8 was supposed to perform better in every aspect as it has better support for new and future hardware right? So why is that not the case and Windows 7 beats it in almost every aspect of performance?

Then comes Windows 10, which is a much newer OS and should support new hardware and make the most out of it even better? But the result is the total opposite as we have seen from @Mr. Fox benchmarks that he posted recently and they tally with my own benchmarks.

Forgetting about benchmarks, even the whole OS has this lag that I feel, everything is not as "snappy" as I am used to. Not happy.....

Credit to @Mr. Fox for taking the time to do all these benchmarks to give us a clear picture how the OSes compare as not everyone has the experience and time to properly test all these performance aspects of an OS:

While some of the points above I can live with because I know once you have setup your OS the way you want, privacy wise and start menu wise I can live with, but what I cannot live with is not having control of Windows Updates properly, no I don't like the idea of using another tool to hide updates, let alone the fact that I just discovered it doesn't work as intended; and then the performance, MS wants to let me use my computer the way they want and update what they want? No thank you

This is all I can remember and I hope I didn't sound like a troll but this is my own personal opinion and would love to hear what others have to say. Heck I'd take Windows 8 any time of the day over 10 if I had to. The only reason I gave it a try was for DX12 and that is the cheapest strategy Microsoft is using to make some forced to upgrade when the time comes that DX12 come out and would only work good with DX12.

I just spent a full day re-installing Windows 7 and acting like a detective to ensure the updates that engage the Windows 10 upgrade don't get installed! It's like avoiding a virus having to avoid this new OS!

    Where it falls short:

    • Forcing updates and not allowing the user to select which updates to be installed
    • Telemetry is enabled by default which sends a lot of data back to Microsoft about who you are and what you do
    • Privacy policy is overly vague in attempts by MS to prevent them from getting sued, but leaves users in the dark
    • From what I have read, telemetry is still active to some degree even when attempting to shut it completely off, and MDL hackers are having trouble turning it completely off (at least for now)
    • Microsoft should not design a system where only system administrators and enthusiasts know how to make it do what they want
    • Wi-Fi sense is a terrible idea and shouldn't be on by default, or even have been included as a feature
    • If hackers get into people's OneDrive accounts or find ways into Windows 10 systems because of all the data transfer that's happening and the capabilities of the OS to send and receive this telemetry data, it's bad news for MS
    • OneDrive encryption key is backed up to the cloud: this is very stupid from a security standpoint and no cryptographer would approve of this method

    Other thoughts:

    • Microsoft is embarking upon a new territory with Windows 10
    • Sataya Nadella does not seem like the right person to be CEO (he doesn't have a leadership mentality)
    • Sataya Nadella was the one who pushed for "everything cloud", and if he's wrong MS is in big trouble
    • Just because Apple iOS is cloud based doesn't mean medical offices that run Windows want their desktop systems transferring data to the cloud -- "apples" and oranges
    • Microsoft is taking a serious business risk with Windows 10
    • Microsoft was presented with a do-or-die situation in terms of competition from all angles and felt a SaaS OS was the way to go
    • Microsoft has released a spying operating system which is not a good idea in the post-Snowden era, especially as more people become in tune with privacy issues and debates
    • Only time will tell whether or not Windows 10 will be successful, but it very well may end up with not a substantial amount of market share

To avoid Windows 10 Upgrade in case anyone is wondering, below are the updates that you need to hide:

Updates to hide to prevent Windows 10 Upgrade / Disable

Exactly! I don't mind automatic updates but driver updates is a big NO NO! We all know how the lovely WHQL Drivers from Micro$haft perform! I cannot count to you the amount of times where I received calls from friends or family members telling me "my wireless stopped working" then I would discover that they had just done a few Windows updates and the shiny new WLAN Driver from Microsoft for some reason made their Wireless stop working as when they would click on the Wireless connections icon in the taskbar there would be no connections = 0 . Just like a virus

True, no wonder why the reg fix didn't work at first when I installed Windows 10 2 days ago on my wife's laptop.

actually it does and does not work, it seems not to survive and you then have to select each.

Also I do not have a new install and wonder if those older legacy apps are even there then?

Edit I sooooo wanted to like this but am becoming more disenchanted by the minute.

Edit2; photobugs need their editing etc to all operate in a productivity manner. Windows 10 seems to want to destroy that, this just will not do at all! M$ your days are numbered!

You see? this is my point, why must we go through all this to make basic functions of an OS work? Install a real start menu, do reg hacks to make built in OS features work as they should have from day one? and the list goes on....

Man I didn't mean to be negative, I really didn't, I really wanted Win 10 to work, to have real UEFI boot with better hardware support, less updates to do out of the box, you know, it sounded great on paper......then come and use it.......and the amounts of negatives exceed the positives and fight every desite in me to keep it.

I do not know who they were listening too but this is just a conglomeration of yuck. I come across some good just to look at it as why, just why would you do it that way? It just seems they are doing things on purpose to upset people and their work flow! Every time I open Edge I want to scream, if I had a gun at the time I am not sure if I would shoot the laptop or myself.

LOL, to me, being a Chrome hater, EDGE is like Chrome + Opera + Maxthon + Safari + IE's quirks all put in one jar, mix them up like a cocktail and you get the new so called game changing browser for Micro$haft named EDGE! It will throw you over the edge of the highest mountain.

I highly agree, this is why i never install driver updates from windows update again after what happened years ago where they broke my devices and i was forced to reformat. I understand forcing important security updates but not when its forcing driver updates too because most of those drivers are outdated or broken. By the looks of it, Windows 8 is looking much better than 10 by a mile and they still are not listening to their customers after all of this time. Its like 1 step forward and two steps back

Very well compiled and nicely done Matrix Leader (and props to Mr. Fox for that awesome performance data spread before screen-gate set in :( ). Can't tell you how much joy it brings me just happily sticking with Win 7 and not stressing myself. My big Win10 sticklers are the WU as well as the plethora of privacy loopholes you have to navigate because Micro$haft decided everyone should be opted-in by default. No thanks. Operating system has become Operated System, and not by you. Unless there are drastic changes to this thing by July 29, 2016 (life permitting of course, :)), it's Win 7 until 2020 for me. DX12 is literally the only draw for me once it's properly harnessed. I just hope they don't overdo it with this Win10 game exclusivity crap they seem to be playing around with. But...it is Micro$haft after all.

It's to the point where whenever I see that subliminal Win10 commercial with all those cute baby faces, I almost want to gag. They're actually making me gag in contempt when I see those adorable faces!

Wow. This is one of the people I trust more than anyone else for Windows and game tweaking, having used his excellent guides for a decade, and here are his candid thoughts on Windows 10:

So depressing :(. Can't believe M$ screwed up Windows 10 even more than it did with 8. How is that even possible?! Looks like it's Windows 7 until 2020 for me, folks. Unless M$ pulls another Xbone and does a quick 180°, I will never install Windows 10, DX12 be damned.

sorry to intrude, but has anyone any idea how to MOVE "my documents" folder in windows 10?
In windows 8 it was easy to move it and then make sure it doesn't stay in C drive (for obvious reasons). Now on windows 10, (i upgraded instead of clean installation) and windows just refuses to allow moving / repointing the my documents folder to another drive.

    Can anyone help?

I found another update that uses telemetry to collect diagnostic data if you have additional language packs installed for Windows 7 - KB3068708. Look for this one in your own update installation and remove it.

"RnRollie" nails it in the following thread:

    http://www.overclock.net/t/1567830/...windows-10-is-watching-logging-everything/100

The spying on itself is not the issue. its what happens with the data collected.

To illustrate: I recently bought some field-glasses online. Turns out these are field-glasses which gets sold mostly to survivalist-types/groups.
So now i'm suddenly on some mailling-list suggesting other useful things.. like a plot of land in Montana, woodland BDU's, etc

What bothers me is that LARGE (and apparently even little) corporations seem to have access to "my life" and keep offering me things to buy that i dont really need but i am more likely to buy because of "my profile".
What bothers me MORE is that i have now gained at least 2 points on the "suspicious" ladder of some government national security database/computer because of being on these survivalist mailing lists.

And the bigger issue is that if tomorrow a extreme right (or left) wing party gets to be the majority by election (or just by powergrab).... who is to say what they decide is right or wrong? Maybe watching Seinfeld reruns makes you a subversive figure? Or visiting certain DIY sites flags you as a potential terrorist? OR dressing up "EMO-style" can land you in jail? OR just not being blond & not having blue eyes makes you a lesser species? And dont say that it cant happen... it did already and it IS already.

"those who have done nothing wrong have nothing to fear".
Its that the spying leads to giving up your rights.. It you are willing to give up some of those rights in exchange for a (false) sense of security, you do not deserve those rights. And a fascist dictatorship is what you deserve then.

Now, all the spying & data gathering aside.
Any (soft/hardware) company worldwide which builds in some form of encryption in their product(s) has to hand over a "master" key to the NSA (or some other acronym organisation)
If not, they will not do business in the USA (nor in most of the USA allied countries - including Europe)
If they refuse, and start doing business with the less USA friendly nations/organisations , they become "highly monitorable".

BTW. this is not an attack on the USA on my part.. other "power-blocks" are doing the same thing... some a bit more covert, some a bit more openly.

Now, before you start offering me tinfoil hats.. look at history... and try to learn something from history.. so that history does not have to repeat itself.
Because what worries me is the worldwide increase of extremism and plain stupidity... an ideal breeding ground for totalitarian regimes.
And unless you are in a high position of power in such a regime, you are not gonna like living in one. So you should not give anyone the tools to create such a regime.

And remember this one from Martin Niemoller

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

LOL, I thought this was funny and wanted to share it with you guys:

From reddit forums, a user trying to stop the automatic driver updates, see how bad it can get:

Very valid point actually. If Microsoft wants to subsidize Windows PC's by offering them for free or very very cheap then sure, they can have control over my machine if I agree to buy it in such shape. But to pay thousands for a computer and have Microsoft decide what's best for *MY* hardware that I paid good money for... F*** YOU Microsoft. Seriously. Unfortunately we're in a bind. For now we can use Windows 7 or even Windows 8.1 with third party add-ons to make it tolerable. But we can see now where this is going. I refuse to buy a system and have someone else control it. I think Microsoft has the wrong mentality here. It will drive people to other OS's. Other than gaming, Microsoft really has no other trump card to hold against users for enacting such drastic tactics.

Regarding point #6, my photo viewer is working fine - can double tap any image and it opens perfectly fine in photo viewer.

If only that was the biggest issue mate... my biggest issue is Windows Driver updates, let me properly disable them and I know how to get around all privacy concerns and quirks of the OS, but Windows Driver updates force fed to my system is a big no no to me.

That's nice to know that DX11 games get a small boost in performance.

My personal bugbear with 10? The fact that accent colour is the same as taskbar colour. That's nothing of course compared to the major issues that others have been facing. Looks like I got lucky with one of the only non-problematic upgrades (within members of this forum community) that actually has caused no issues whatsoever so far *knock on wood*

@badiyee - First, just turn off the OneDrive garbage with Group Policy.

Windows 8/8.1 and 10 can all have serious issues with file permissions getting screwed up. You may need to take ownership of everything (root) on the data drive, make "Everyone" the owner and grant full write access in order to direct Windows to move your user folders to another drive. I've had random nonsense like this from time to time with all of the OSes after Windows 7. By default, I set my Windows up this way and never have any issues with Windows wearing the pants.

Mine got upgraded on day 1 release, so i'm quite sure this isn't the preview build, or unless even day 1 release is a preview?

Okay, this is... I only know that group policy is related to the personal / work thing, but this is my personal laptop, and i've never installed anything that's work related. So i'm not sure as to what to do, and the user file keeps eating up my precious SSD space. This didn't happened on win8 because when I bought it together with the laptop, my OS is in the SSD but the documents, videos, etc (which the windows have default folders on c:/ can be moved/redirected to D, and E, etc.)

    Le sigh.

Open your User folder. If you have a D: drive you want to use, right click on each user folder that you wish to move, then choose Properties. Go to the location tab and type in the new location (i.e. D:\Documents, D:\Music, etc.) click OK and answer yes to the prompt to move your files to the new folder.

To disable OneDrive press Win+R (run) and type in GPEDIT.MSC and find the setting to Prevent the use of OneDrive for file storage (see highlighted information in JPG) open it and change to "Enabled" then save/close. If necessary, right click the system tray icon and exit OneDrive. It should not come back and all of the synced files should be gone from your HDD (but still in your cloud folder).

This is what happens to mine. Everything doubled.

For example the pictures is correct, it should be on a drive not on C:

However clicking on the second "pictures" folder shows its on C. Odder thing is, it doesn't have location tab, but the one outside of C: folder (the first picture folder) has.

I'm baffled. Yet at the same time things pile up in the C: drive of the user folder.

I'm completely baffled with no methods to move or delete them. Not even with the method you gave @Mr. Fox

That happens when you don't move the libraries correctly.

Here is how I do it and it always works.

on my D: partition or whichever partition you want to move them to, create a new folder named: yourusername ,in my case, I create a new folder called Matrix Leader

Now in that new folder, create the following empty folders: Contacts, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Music, Pictures, Videos

    Now, go to C:\Users\YourUserName

Right click on each one of the folders like Contacts for example, then Properties, then Location, then Move it to the appropriate blank folder you crated on the D: Partition under your username folder

Now that we have all the folders moved, you need to show the Libraries in the EXPLORER left nav bar, once you see the libraries, expand it

Now you will see Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos on the left hand side under libraries......

right click on each one of them then select Properties

The location is now displayed and should show the D: partition, still, you need to click on the RESTORE DEFAULTS button from the bottom, that will correctly associate the library to the folder and it will no longer show "1 location" on the top left when you enter it

You need to do this for each library from the left hand pane under Libraries.

Yet another issue, I have my trackpad option to disable with a mouse plugged in. Well this for some reason does not survive a reboot. While the option is selected when I pull the dialog I have to uncheck and then check the box to get it working again.

Edit; actually it is the admin account. I select trackpad off option but there is no effect. if I then log into that account it enable the trackpad with the mouse plugged in.

Edit 2; Solved it. The included elan drivers are buggy. they do not under admin disable the touchpad. I installed the OEM 8.1 drivers and now all is well.

How odd. I did not have that issue. Must be a Windows 10 bug that happens randomly. I had the location tab as well, so not sure what's up with that.

We need every major tech site to publish an article like this. And then every trash site too, so Microsoft gets the point. It's like they have a hard time swallowing pride and admit and acknowledge a mistake. That's a recipe for corporate disaster. If you can't offer what the public wants, but more importantly please the enthusiasts and content creators and hard core gamers who make the most use out of the OS, and admit you made a mistake and learn from it, you're just a flaming fighter jet getting ready to auger into the sea.

Thank you for reading! I love the part where they mention they don't want to get results from Amazon, Bing, latest finance facts, etc, when they search their PC! They want to search THEIR PC otherwise they know how to get on Google and search for any web related article that Micro$haft wants to popup in our faces!

Miscro$h4ft created the technical preview for a long time, promising to listen this time to their customers and to basically give us an OS created from the peoples' feedback........instead what do we get? A virus called Windows 10

Privacy concerns and forced metro app usage aside, what exactly does Windows 10 offer that 8.1 doesn't? DX12? What uses that?

When you combine what is right now, a pointless upgrade, with all the other issues that have been talked about - it's basically solidified my decision to stay with 8.1. I'll have another look sometime before the free upgrade period expires.
