Why can't I get avchd (mts, m2ts) video thumbnail previews?

Windows 8.1 Samsung ATIV 7 ultrabook.

I can see all other types of video and picture (.mp4, jpg, mov, etc) thumbnail previews, just not AVCHD (.mts, .m2ts files). This is the case for both win 8 apps like Gallery HD as well as file explorer.

I tried installing media player codec pack to see if it would fix the problem - didn't.

I went to view/folder options/ in file explorer and I'm not set to show icons instead of thumbnail previews. I can open and play the AVCHD files, I just can't see thumbnail previews which are really important to me.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

im using vlc player and ive noticed in the past the odd 1 or 2 wont show but the rest of the mts/avchd video's do show as thumbnails/large icons.
in the folder you have them stored click on the (in windows 7) change your view and you can click through all the ways to view the video's ie, content, title, list, small icons, large icons.
next time you go back to the folder they will have saved on what you picked.

no idea if its the same as windows 8 though.

That doesn't solve my problem. My view is set to see thumbnail previews, but instead of seeing a preview, I see a placeholder icon. The icon is the same for all video and the look of it depends on which default program I have set to open the avchd files.
