Why can't we freely move files around in folders?

Sometimes, especially with pictures, I like to group them how I want them, and not by name or anything like that... I have Googled this and it seems to have been purposely left out of Windows 7... My question is, why the heck would they leave this out

Yea, i was annoyed at first but it's easy to get used to. Nothing you can do unless you change the names of the file/folders or you sort them. There's a lot of sorting options.

For images at least you can pop up the file properties and add category info to the tags section on the details tab, then add tell the directory to sort by tags.

It's not perfect but it would allow you to custom sort images at least.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. You can of course make all the folders you want and put your files anywhere you want.

You also have some ability to move the locations where things like "documents" point to. Plus if you have images where you want to have them, you can link those folders into your images library. Basically things like "documents" and "libraries" are just links to folders somewhere. When Windows versions first came up with "my documents", I resisted using this and just kept my files where I wanted them. I have gradually started using "my documents" over the years because it is just more convenient to do so since "my documents" is a shortcut that pops up at the top of explorer.

I'm a little bit new to Windows 7 so I'm not totally attuned to its system of libraries, but I'm going to eventually conform my masses of folders to the Win7 system since I now have 3 Win7 computers that I use regularly.

He simply wants to turn off the auto-arrange feature that cannot be turned off.

Yup. Looks like you have to actually rename em, which isn't hard considering Windows will do the incremental numbering during the rename.

Are you talking about viewing folder contents by "tile" or "icon"?
I don't do this except for folders that contain only photos, typically I look at file names viewed in "details" view, and no matter what folder I'm looking at I normally view it in alphabetical order. Since I started using Windows 3.1 I've always been content to use alphabetical order and I've never thought about wanting anything else.

OTOH there are some folders where I really want a few members of the contents to be at the top of the list. I've gotten in the habit of beginning the file name with a _ character, and alphabetical order puts this at the top of the list.
