    Why do I have 2 windows live messenger icons on the taskbar?

    no matter what I do, they are always 2, :x

    I think it's because the way the new taskbar works, the old small MSN Messenger icon that used to reside in the system notification tray in XP/Vista is now in the taskbar so I would guess when you "x" out of the MSN window you have there, you should see just one now in the taskbar, correct?

    It's confusing I think because you don't have the "combine" feature turned ON under Taskbar options (if I'm not mistaken).

    It`s because you disabled the taskbar icon combining features. You can change it back in the taskbar properties.

    I like live messenger's try icon, so I switched msn to vista compatibility mode and the try icon now appears.

    The only reason they do it is so that your Picture and Display Name show up when Messenger is minimsed

    Hopefully they will find a better way in the next version of Messenger
