I think it's because the way the new taskbar works, the old small MSN Messenger icon that used to reside in the system notification tray in XP/Vista is now in the taskbar so I would guess when you "x" out of the MSN window you have there, you should see just one now in the taskbar, correct?
It's confusing I think because you don't have the "combine" feature turned ON under Taskbar options (if I'm not mistaken). -

It`s because you disabled the taskbar icon combining features. You can change it back in the taskbar properties.
I like live messenger's try icon, so I switched msn to vista compatibility mode and the try icon now appears. -

The only reason they do it is so that your Picture and Display Name show up when Messenger is minimsed
Hopefully they will find a better way in the next version of Messenger
