What makes OneNote so special that Microsoft feels that by default it should automatically be started at boot time?

Yes, you can turn it off, but none of the other programs in the Office suite do this. Besides, I just can't see how OneNote's usage model would benefit by having it running in the background all the time. If anything, I'd think that having Outlook constantly running in the background makes far more sense.

I've wondered the same thing too, still haven't found a better reason than to sync your notes ASAP and give you the tools or w/e? Still, I don't get why that couldn't just start when you start onenote unless you have notebooks that are hundreds of MBs in size.

Same here there is no real good reason for it to start by default only unless they want you to use their server and software is all I can guess. I just remove the default note launch and it is good as stop from running....

"I just remove the default note launch and it is good as stop from running.... " That doesn't seem to work as the next time you boot it's there again. I can't seem to get rid of that pesky one-note program. I never use it.

OneNote has some functionality related to "screen clippings" and audio notes that require it to run in the background. Those are actually quite well done and useful, but if you don't use that, or don't use OneNote itself, just remove the entry in the list of startup programs.

Microsoft Groove (what the hell is that anyways) used to do the same thing, I just disabled it from starting up with CCleaner (did the same with OneNote, can also do it with MSconfig)

Guess I'll have to try those, I haven't been using OneNote for long and haven't had a use for them yet. At least I'll get the chance to put OneNote through its paces in terms of syncing between Office 2010, 2013, Windows Phone 8 and the Metro app.

I think something else is wrong there and sounds like you install has been corrupted during the install/updates process. Because any Office family I load I can remove the startup launch and it is gone. Are you sure your the Admin to do it as that sounds like you deleted it but the Admin account is the one that replaces it back?

Disabling it from the OneNote settings should make it permanent. Launch OneNote and it's somewhere in the options, if you have trouble finding it, i'll look for it again and give you more detailed instructions.
