I hear that it is beneficial to remove bloatware. My question is, if i just manually remove the bloatware, and make sure the processes from those useless programs are removed, is this essentially the same benefit as a fresh install? I never bothered re-installing when I got this notebook, and definitely don't want to do it now that I've configured everything to my liking. Is the reason for a clean install to insure that all those garbage nonsense processes are not running in the background hogging resources?
My main question is- am I running a slower system than I could be if I had done a clean install of Vista? and is there any way to achieve the same speeds without re-installing? like a little visit to msconfig, program removal, registry cleaning?

I had this same exact question more than a year ago! Another NBR user explained using a rather blunt (gross) example that I'll pass along to you-
If you have a cup of water with 'poop' in it, what's the most effective way to clean it up? If you just scoop the crap out, is your water once again as clean as it was? NOPE! If you dump out the entire contents of the cup, scrub it (with Clorox!) and then refill the clean cup with clean water, it will be much more effective.
Make sense? -
You're probably still going to have junk in the registry and so forth, along the lines allfiredup mentioned
. But if you've got it all configured and you're happy with the performance, then it's probably fine to let things ride. Just remember to check out this thread.
Cheers... -
'registry junk' does not in and of itself cause system problems..
Try again. -
i mean, does simply having bloatware on your system that never runs in the background really make a difference? is it sort of like having a bunch of junk in your attic? it's there but really doesnt hurt anyone?
-
I assume it deletes all junk startups, processes, etc

For the OCD among us, if it doesn't serve a purpose- it doesn't need to be there! Unwanted/unrequested trial software is just clutter that I must clean up!

The next best thing to performing a "clean install" is to download Revo Uninstaller (LINK) and PC Decrapifier (LINK). They're both free and they'll get rid of the unwanted software, related registry entries and any other associated files they can find. They're also great at 'bullying' stubborn trialware that doesn't want to be deleted so easily!
-
...registry "cleaners" can break a lot if you let them run rampage... check every entry they suggest they remove...
-
you know, if i could change the name of this thread i would rename it to:
Convince me why i should really do a clean OS re-install!!!
is it really worth it? -
Yes it's really worth it in the long haul.

I reinstall So often I literally have a folder on my desktop called "things to keep" If my computer ever decides to slow down or something I simply copy the folder (7 gigs) to my external and then simply reinstall. When that is done I go and reinstall my favorite programs new (dont forget your bookmarks!). After I do this I can be sure my computer is completely clean and is running at maximum performance!
Think of like this: You have to clean your house. Instead of doing the work of cleaning your entire house you delete it and make another one, while simply putting everything you wanted to keep back. -

a friend of mine bought a consumer hp notebook (i only buy business notebooks myself for build quality).
he then tried to dj on it. he removed ALL bloatware. about after an hour of djing, there was a 1sec silence break. next hour, again, and again.
after a clean install, there was no such silence break anymore.
as the example with the poop above. you can't be sure that it's at a clean state no matter how much you remove and reconfigure.
with a fresh installation, you can. and build up from this. -

There's really nothing to convince you to do a fresh install. The performance difference is minimal. Just uninstall all the bloatware and do a defrag and everything will be like new.

If you're asking... YES, REINSTALL.
-
I would re-install, if I'm sat there and I know the machine can run faster, and the only way to do it re-install, out comes the disk lol!!!. It doesn't take to long if you know what your doing, and it does make a difference, a noticeable difference.
-
Why not just do the clean install anyway?
-
I clean-install about once every six months (and I'm due soon enough).
I find it helps clear out a lot of the cruft on my system - this time I'll also be partitioning my hard drive so all of my programs/files are in the faster-spinning region of my drive, and I also have a designated spot for Windows 7 RC. -
Someone got me hooked on that
It makes your lappy perform better, and like you a bit better for it!

....my old Medion always ran worse on a clean instal - it also ran slower than my mother's laptop which had the original installatin + plenty of stuff.
Our first Medion laptp still runs on its initial instal at my grandfather's place - and its still faster than my old Medion ever was with a Clean instal...
My Vaio is therefore just tidied up.
MEdions - XP
Vaio - Vista
Why does clean Vista install make computer faster?
