Hi all, I am trying to help my mother in law. Everytime she clicks on a link or types something in her google search, they all open up in new windows.

I have compared her setting to mine and all are exact , so what could be causing this problem ( as my IE8 seems fine). I told her to do a virus scan just now just in case.

We both use IE8 with Vista.

    any help, advice greatly appreciated.

Close IE8. Right-click on the icon, choose 'Run as Administrator'.

I know it makes no sense, but it's Microsoft. Try it and see what happens. If that resolves it, it should be fixed from now on, and you can run IE normally.

    Thanks mate.
1 little bit of rep power to you my friend.

that was a strange one easily resolved. But what d'ya think caused it in the first place. I thought it would surely have to be the settings but......

    thank you.

Did you check the tab settings for IE?

Check Tabbed Browsing Settings under Internet Options.

The setting (to reuse browser windows) that you're looking for is here: From Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Browsing: Check "Reuse Windows for launching shortcuts..."

There is also a specific Google search setting that addresses this exact issue. Open Google and in the upper right-hand corner of the screen click on Search Settings. Scroll down to Results Window, and UNcheck: "Open search results in a new browser window."

Thanks for the suggestions gang, but this was resolved yesterday. No need to continue to reply, I don't think the OP is checking.

Yes everyone, thank you. But like I said in my previous two posts, my setting were all fine and not changed from like.....ever. So the problem was not my settings. That is the confusing thang.

    But never mind. Resolved now
