Hello. I've been wondering me why the addition of Vista (home premium) to a laptop (so when there is an option not to buy vista with the laptop) is only around 130 euros. Because if I don't want this option and I buy Vista elsewhere it costs 310 euros.

Is the 130 euro version worse? Or can't I reinstall Vista with the 130 euro version? Or is it the DVDrom that costs that much?

    Thank you for your replies.

addition vista to laptop = propably OEM licence, meaning 1/3 of normal retail cost. If OEM then: can reinstall to the same machine ONLY

    cheers ...

    Thank you for the information.

Can this be done with any Vista (in this case) home premium DVD? And what price would the DVD be? Or would it be possible to get it from Compal itself?

You can buy Vista Retail (sometimes called full version) for about 230€ for home premium. At the same time you can buy Vista OEM (sometimes called system builder version) for about 80€ for the home premium edition. Many online shops sell the OEM version.

Almost all (pretty much 100% ;) laptops that come with pre installed windows come with the cheap OEM version.

If you get OEM with a laptop/computer it is locked to that system and can only be installed on that system.

If you buy the OEM in a shop you can install it just like a normal windows on different laptops/computers, ofcourse not at the same time. The only differance between OEM and Retail is that Retail you can change from 32 to 64bit or from 64bit to 32bit by asking MS to send you a DVD. With the OEM you have to choose how many bits you want, when you buy it, and then cant change it. Also with OEM you dont get the fancy box, no support from MS and no instruction manuel.
