    Hello,

I saw that every famous members of this forums or guys like Prema, are saying that we should completly avoid to use Furmark, and even some are saying the same with Kombustor.

What the truth behind all this ?
Why we shouldn't use Furmark and Kombustor ?

    Thank you

    Nico

Because it puts abnormal stress on your GPU that doesn't really reflect a normal user's usage scenarios. don't fry your GPU man

As what the others have said, apparently Furmark (and Kombustor) are power viruses (virii?). They put far too much stress on your hardware than is reasonable to test for performance, thereby damaging your hardware. Same issue for Prime95, since we're on the subject.

If you like non-broken hardware, I'd avoid it.

Thank you for your answers, but is it only tied to power that cpu/gpu are reaching with those tests ?

As you stress component on their max limits of power usage you are in fact wearing out those same components. Whenever the max voltages are being run through them slight voltage leakage develops over time. Eventually this will cause component failure. Now this could be from a short period of time to one that takes so long it is never noticed.

The other issue is stress and heat can show media issues sooner than later. This such as cold joints to just poor media material used.

On the one hand, you don't want to stress the machine more than you have to, but on the other, you don't want to wait until it's out of warranty to discover that running an intense game or program fries the machine. In general, it is recommended to stress it as hard as you intend to when you first receive it -- but no harder. Prime95 in its normal mode is actually a legitimate program intended to find Mersenne primes; it's only the "torture test" mode that is problematic.

Even the GPU-Z render test will work fine for testing your thermals. I usually run 3DMark in a loop for a more "real world" test.
