Why won't "all programs" stay on start menu?

I wish when I hit "start" the all of my programs are available instead of having to hit "all programs". I looked for a permanent setting but could not find one. Did I miss it or is it not possible?
    Thanks in advance,

I don't think there's an option. There may be some software out there to do that, but I think that's just the way Microsoft does it. It's been that way since Windows 95.

There is no Microsoft supported option for doing that (to the best of my knowledge). It is possible to "hack" the settings to do something like that, maybe somebody has already created such a program, I guess you could google around for it.

just create a folder with the shortcuts of your most frequently used programs.......and then add the toolbar to your taskbar

    I am confused.

You click on the pretty little Vista Start Menu Windows flag, it comes up with those items pinned to the Start Menu, and, if you selected the option for recent programs, those too, and with "All Programs" at the bottom. You click on All Programs and whatever was display above before is replaced by the programs and the "All Programs" becomes "Back".

You are objecting to having to click twice?

I don't even have to click a second time. Just pausing the cursor over the "All Programs" will trigger the switchover. Likewise, moving it off momentarily and then back triggers the switch on "Back" as well.

true, wonder if there is a limit as to how many programs one can pin to the start menu (on top of the recently used ones)

    cheers ...

I do not keep the recently used, and only have a few rarely used programs pinned. I restructured the Start Menu to suit my needs, and built a directory/folder with the shortcuts to my commonly used programs and used that to populate my custom toolbar.

What I'm referring to is when you click the start flag, and the program space only has "internet" and "mail". I would like to see all of my programs without having to mouse over or hit the "all programs" button. It is just too laggy and slow. I'm accustomed to the fast menu option from TweakUI in XP and hate waiting that second or two for the items to display. I know it sounds OCD but it is what it is. :)

this will only be "Pinned" for the current user that is logging on, multiple users on one machine will have their own start menu

    cheers ...

Exactly. Locate the program(s) you want to persist on the front screen of the Start menu, right-click, select "Pin to Start Menu".

I moved the settings for Start Menu to "All Users" even though I am the only user on this machine since some programs install to the user and others to all users, I wanted them all in one place.

You can also unpin programs the using the same tech( if you don't know this will not work with folders, just programs) the number of programs on the start menu is set to 5 or 6 by default and can be set to use 30. To change the setting right click the start menu and choose properties>>customize>>general tab> look at Programs>>change the number of program on start menu to desired setting.
