I've heard from sources Microsoft's super-awesome OS concept, Longhorn, which was turned into Vista will add a lot of its features into Windows 7, which is a rewrite of the Windows OS. I've heard from one of the products managers that work at Microsoft (which I won't name) that Microsoft still has the features of Longhorn being finalized and perfected for Windows 7, and they weren't released with Vista because Microsoft didn't want to release such a major new release with Vista because of the OS rewrite they're planning for Windows 7, and are waiting to implent the features into the new code. They also believe the average user's computer won't be able to run Longhorn well and are waiting for a majority of users to have atleast have dual core processors.
For those who don't know what the killer Longhorn concept was, here's a video:

Slightly old news, but Microsoft doesn't need an OSX killer. They need an XP killer.

Awesome laptops Notebook Evangelist
agreed xp is going way better then vista especially in games
-
They've been also planing on incorporating more "Live" content, with the goal of eventually migrating most of your data to networked storage locations, likely M$ servers. Also they plan on further integrating and linking all of your communications, IM, email, phone, chat, etc. They want to have everyone everywhere, constantly connected and communicating through their network. Which all gives me the creeps to be really honest.

Microsoft dominates the market because nearly every manufacturer preinstall a windows OS, Whats gone wrong for Vista is that everyone is sticking with XP because they know it better and that it's better performance at games. If MS released some sort of games accelerator pack for vista the die hard fans might swap

Just to end this on an agreeable note: I prefer XP over Vista, too. -
I would say, the number one reason for consumers not to switch is because of "fear of the unknown", for companies, it's definitely compatibility.
-
XP has die-hard fans, indeed. But, unless you're buying a new computer you don't want to spend money on a new OS.
-
Once u buy a new laptop..say HP.. u are stuck with Vista for life.... The support for XP is none..
Hunting down drivers is too tuff for avg. user.
Thats how MS dominates market -
Yeah and it's better than having all sorts of OS available. For instance, x64 support is bad (compared to x86) because x86 is not being pushed out from the market.

if they didn't release their killer features w/ vista then waht were they waiting for..5 years and no update and then this BS. thats lame..

And thus, refer to my first post.

I must say; that video looked pretty impressive.
But yeah, XP is really the only competition for Vista right now. Maybe SP1 will help change that in some respects. -
I followed Vista since Beta 1 and what I read was that a problem happened and they had to abbandon everything that happened in 2000-2003
EDIT: Well, it was supposed to come in October 2003, so yeah that's the part they had to abandon. I doubt W7 will look like that, there was no GUI as of 6 months ago and the current alpha version uses AERO. -
