    Hi All,
Me and my girlfriend run a business together. At home, we use a Synology DS211+ NAS as a fileserver so we can both access files. We are going to travel however and I’m not sure how to setup the “mobile workspace”.

We need to be able to work with the same files easily, however Dropbox like solutions won’t do, since we mostly won’t be connected to the net.

I know Lacie (and probably other brands) has a NAS with WIFI built in, however I don’t think this is an option since we’re travelling with hand luggage only (NAS is too bulky and heavy) en it’ll probably have to be plugged in to function. Furthermore the data will not be redundant, should the NAS drive fail.

So basically I think I’m looking for some kind of Sync Software that is able to directly connect to another laptop through wifi and sync specified directories. Syncing folder also means data will be redundant, should one of the laptops break or get stolen.

Or maybe it would be possible to run an SVN server (VisualSVN?) on one of the laptops, connect the other laptop with an adhoc wifi connection and use a SVN client like Tortoise?

Anybody any suggestions on how to set up a mobile workspace as described?

are always both laptops on when working? if so, just do an adhoc network + a network share. depending on the windows version you could do with offline files, even (professional, ultimate).

but yeah, svn server would do, too..

We'll usually be working the same hours, however I do want the files to be available on both laptops, since it'll definitely happen that one of us will be working while the other is not.

A Distributed File System replicated namespace share will do, however I doubt whether this is available in Win7 x64 prof (my current OS). Standard SMB Network share won't suffice I'm afraid, since it'll be annoying that the other laptop can only access the files when the other is switched on.

Come to think of it, SVN would be possible, however not ideal. The overhead/maintenance would be quite a bit of work (since files will get versioned, which can be a pain when working with larger image files or video files).

    Anybody any other suggestions?

Dropbox - What is LAN sync? -

I haven't tested that myself, I don't know if you need internet connection to be available anyways.

In the NAS front, Asus had something like this 7 years ago:
ASUS WL-HDD 2.5” - NAS and Wireless AP - Features :: TweakTown USA Edition

I would guess someone would have copied that with modern specs already?

some sync tool (synctoy, allwaysync, xcopy) + network share, then? so you have it on both.
