I have a pentium 3 1ghz, 512mb ram and a 5gb hard drive...
will windows xp run smoothly on this computer? or do i have to go with windows 2000?
also, i want to install windows xp + SP3, is 3gb enough for that purpose?

You should be able to run XP.... But thats about it. You will not be doing much with it, with only 1.5GB HD space free.. Might even be getting low hd space messages. If anything, throw in a slightly larger drive... and then you should be alright..
I dont even know if you will be able to watch a 480P youtube video though, but for Word/Office programs, mssg and mail you should have no problems. -
Try plugging in an extra bar of RAM, will save you a lot of waiting time/frustration.
-
Not worth upgrading an ancient system like that. But... I think XP should run ok... don't know about SP3 but I guess probably.
-
That Pentium 3 is sooo slow, I think this system is really going to struggle hard.
Not worth upgrading either. -
It will be slow, but it's certainly possible. I was running XP on a Pentium III 440Mhz, with 64MB, below the minimum requirements. It wasn't pretty, but it ran.
-
It'll run XP SP3 just fine. The HDD is a bit small though so space will be tight.
I've got an old HP Omnibook XE3 with a PIII 933MHz, 512 MB and 40GB HDD dual booting XP SP3 and Xubuntu. XP runs fine on it and is reasonably snappy, but I wouldn't try any heavy duty multitasking on it. -
well all my sister wants is internet, word, facebook, and the occasional dvd movie
-
I ran XP SP3 on a Pentium 3 system with 384MB of ram and a 500mhz CPU, you should be FINE on a 1GHz Pentium 3 with 512MB of ram, my only real doubt is the HDD space. I was using a 10GB HDD and it wasn't enough for much.
-
I was able to put XP on 2GB of HDD with 1GB free (Eee PC 701), but it was nLited.
If you want your XP to be less bloated, use nLite with your copy of XP. -
It'll work just fine, no worries. I currently have XP SP3 on a HP Pavilion 8660c with a 500 Mhz P3 and 256 MB of RAM. Runs pretty good.
You might want to bump up the HD space though. -
-
it will run XP fine and playing dvd movies will not be a problem also. If she needs office see if you can find office 2003. 2007 uses more resources.
Internet will not be a problem but youtube videos as well as facebook videos and facebook and other flash games might not run smooth. -
yea, i can confirm it will run fine. I used to run xp on a 550Mhz cpu and 256mb ram and it was fine. I'm not sure how it'll handle internet though, because flash tends to use lots of resources.(I even used 2.8gb on firefox and w7 the other day, with lots and lots of tabs open)

ya that machine should run xp nicely for what you want it too do.
sense i have alot of older laptops and 2 desktop that runs windows 7 and xp
2 of my dell desktops run windows 7 smooth with 512mb of ram each and one is a 2.6 p4 and other is a p4 2.8 ht and have aero and everything running on both of them
and also got 2 other laptops twins dell 8200 laptops with 128mb of ram and other has 512mb of ram with p3 1ghzs cpus and they both have xp and run smooth even on youtube videos.
planing on upgradeing every computer and laptop in the house too win 7 down the road tho just have to put more ram into them.
one thing i would recommend is a bigger hdd sense they are cheep now days that's if your sister is gona need more space if not than it be fine the way it is now -
hey thanks for the info guys, can now go ahead buying the needed ram for it!
-
I would buy a bigger hard drive for that if your finances permit.
-
It took about 5 minutes to boot and ran fine...
right up until I started to type anything, then it just froze up on me
ended up with damn small linux on it and it ran like a champ. -
XP SP3 will be slow as hell
XP SP2/SP1/without any service packs should be fine -
A lot of people say you should get a bigger HDD, but no one tells you that older systems have limitations for how much HDD space they can address.
Example 1: a 400 MHz P2 laptop I've used could only use about 30 GB maximum of a HDD.
Example 2: a 1300 MHz PM laptop without 48-bit LBA can only use 137.4 GB (or 137 x 0.93 = 128 GB).
It is possible that your laptop have the same limitation as in example 2, and IIRC it can be fixed with a newer BIOS version, IF such exists. Otherwise, get a 120 GB or smaller. -
My last laptop was a pentium 3 999Mhz, 256mb RAM and It ran fine, although I had a 20gb HDD not a 5.
-
Oh well, XP actually ran fine on my rig, I could use it to type documents and stuff, and it booted up in something like 2 minutes... -

You are better off with Vista, imo.

Try Windows 7, it can run on a T21 with a 800MHz P3 and 512MB RAM.
Will I be able to run XP well on this computer?
