Just curious if Microsoft will offer a version for netbooks that will strip out a lot of the unnecessary stuff to get the install under 1GB for a 4GB SSD netbook.

According to Steven Sinofsky, Windows 7 plans to target netbooks.

I thought it was well known that the Starter Edition would be precisely built for Netbooks?

if you have a 4GB OS install on a 16GB hard drive, you have space concerns for sure. definitely time to optimize space over speed in my humble opinion.

I thought the Starter edition only allowed like 3 apps open simulataneously. I am assuming this doesn't mean services?
edit: nevermind, read this blog entry:

and then an update at inquirer if there's any truth to that:

Basically saying they lifted the app limit. Although for a netbook, if included windows apps don't count towards the limit (like windows explorer) it wont' be such a huge deficit anyhow due to limited RAM and screen real estate. -

@Size, no but a 1.5 GB install is also not a problem on a 16gb ssd. Which was the xp situation with olpc's 1gb of flash, you cant expect 7 to magically do 1gb for your 4gb. Would be nice but the OS will be aimed at whats on the market or coming out at the time of release. -
Well, either way I'm impressed that RC1 has about same install footprint as Vista. I get about 8GB for base folders and files + 8GB for pagefile, hibernate, and shadow on a 30GB partition.
Will MS natively support a version for Netbooks?
