I'm about to buy a new notebook (probably the HP dv6000 series).

I have recently purchased a lot of software that I planned to install on it (Office 2003, Norton 2007, Quicken 2006, Photoshop Elements 5.0, ...). I sure hope it will all work ... I haven't found a place that lists compatibility from this angle.

Today, when looking at notebooks at Circuit City, a salesman told me that Office 2003 is NOT compatible with the Vista OS. I hope he is wrong. (I just completed some Office 2003 classes and am currently enrolled in Access 2003.)

Does anyone know if it's true, that Office 2003 won't work with Vista?
And how about any other programs?

thats a good question, and I cannot answer that. but I can say for sure that office 2007(the newest edition) will work. maybe office it like windows, and you can upgrade instead of buying new.

They just say that to get you to buy new junk. Though technically, he is right in that it is not "officially approved" for vista, only 2007 is.

well salespersons! more buying, more commission - still, it is a bit below the bell trying to sell something that is not being needed

hmmm, most windows softwares (office 2003 included) are automatically earmarked as "work with windows vista" - this is a far cry from being IN/NOT.compatible. The sales.gentleman was technically incorrect as well.

I personally do not see the whole lot of a difference between being stamped "officially approved" and "work with.."

    cheers ...

It should run, I had Works 2001 Suite , included Word, Streets and Trips, Excel Etc: Etc: Work on XP and Vista before I installed 2007.

So I don't see why 2003 should not work.

Thanks for the feedback on Office 2003. I'm relieved!

Many say that Office 2007 is great, but I'd rather not deal with the learning curve this year. Vista will be enough to learn for the time being.

Is there any one place to get answers about other software? I couldn't find it on microsoft.com or by googling.

If not, I guess we can contact each software vendor (who will want to sell their newest version.) Or just try installing each and see what happens.

I heard that iTunes said NOT to upgrade to Vista yet, so I'll postpone installing that for a little while.

iTunes works pretty alright on Vista. I've got it open now. The only blunder I've seen with it so far is that when I first open it, the whole window is black with some bits of white text. About 10 seconds later, iTunes fixes itself and all is 100% from then on.

And my girlfriend had said something about Vista messing up iPods (not that she knows...) but in case you've heard that, it's not true. My 2nd gen Nano has worked perfectly since I upgraded to Vista a month ago.

That's not as bad as the big problems when the new iPod firmware and new iTunes came out around November. On the compatibility list that qhn shared, I found a link to this from Apple http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305042

There are some explanations and tips for preventing problems there.

I can probably wait a month before installing iTunes, since I never had music on my old laptop, due to its tiny harddrive. But then I'll have to do it, so I can reformat my desktop and give it new life.

It's good to hear you guys are satisfied with Vista.

That sales person is right. My friend bought a Laptop last week and he had 2003 with him. So he tried to install it in his new laptop with Vista operating system. He said he got compatibility error. He asked me for help. I went to see whats happening and yes....it doesnt load in Vista. That sucks but thats true. It sucks for the fact that now my friend has to buy Office 2007 because he has Vista. May be its just our machine and may be it does load in vista. Someone else here might suggest a different opinion on compatibility but according to my first hand experience with my friend's Vista machine and Office 2003.....well...it just hesitates to load in the machine.

Office XP (minus Outlook 2002 password retention) & the complete Office 2003 suite work fine in Vista. I'm currently on Vista Ultimate with Office 2003.

Office 2003 does work on Vista. My neighbor has it running on his desktop. He told me that Best Buy said it didn't work and tried to sell him a 2007. He tried to install 2003 anyway and it worked perfectly.

I just installed Office 2003 (Student/Teacher) on a new HP Vista laptop today, and it seems to be ok.

I had some doubts about where to install, since there was a Microsoft Office folder (containing 2007) under Program Files and that's where 2003 wanted to install. I thought about remaming one, but I went ahead with the default.

Now as I browse the harddrive, I see within that folder there are subfolders for Office11 and Office12. And the startup folder for Microsoft Office includes both the 2003 and 2007 versions of each program.

So far, so good. (I'm glad to have trial versions of 2007 to try, but I'm just not ready yet.)

To those who've had problems with Office 2003 in Vista -- what errors are you getting? Office 2003 was extensively tested on Vista throughout the beta (and I don't remember any major prolems late in the beta), and runs fine for most people. I've only heard of a few people getting errors (and they only seem to happen during install). Running the installer in XP compatibility mode, and as an administrator usually gets rid of pesky installation problems.
