Hate to admit it but from startup to desktop mode has never been so fast, tray icons loads at 2 sec, applications start much faster. This should have been what vista had become but oh well, moving on...

Windows 7 is a big jump over XP, but not that big over Vista. Actually, Windows 7 is just how Vista should have been. It's nice and everything, but honestly, I don't think I am going to buy it. I'll sure be happy when it comes in my next laptop though :D

You can get the beta still I think, My opinion is it is great, way better than vista and xp combined, I especially like the new desktop themes that allow your desktop background to rate through your pictures folders.

And yes, its alot faster at startup, also networking id alot easier, its like an OS for dummies. :)

i don't like the gui. i'm wondering what "worth it" means. i owned some xp licence, and now have vista licences. they all work and are fast and rockstable. it will sure worth it, based on vista experience.

i just don't like the new gui.. the taskbar only, actually (and the startmenu). more about it here

i heard its gonna be everything that Vista was supposed to be... more of like a better developed version of Vista.

also heard that not all versions will be in retail..and only preloaded on laptops.

in that case i ll wait for W7 release so i can buy a new gaming laptop.

    I think it depends.

If you have a good running Vista laptop no need.

If you have a powerful XP laptop - it may be worth a try.

If it runs on "lower specs" than Vista then its definitely a plus, but for all those who have a stable instal, it would be - I dare say - pointless unless they bought a neew laptop too.

Windows 7 is more of a marketing gimmick than anything else. While I do enjoy running the beta 7 OS as my main OS, I hardly see anything that would require an upgrade from Vista to 7. The main reason I've been running 7 is mainly because it's new and I'm always open to trying new and different things, plus I'm kinda bored of Vista. But honestly, at the end of the day, it's just a rebranded Vista with a couple of extra prettier but useless features.

Will it be worth it? Depends on the price.
With the current economical meltdown, massive lay-offs and everything, I don't see myself spending much $/€ on the version I'd like (professional) anytime soon (nor am I willing to compromise and buy a starter/premium version).
I like the OS, although there aren't such huge differences compared to Vista.

I think that if you are going from XP to 7, then it would be worth it. However, going from Vista to 7, it depends on which features are must have for you and honestly for me, I haven't tried it but I have read a lot about it, they aren't that many that make me scream, 'I must have it'. Don't get me wrong, when I get a new desktop or laptop and Win 7 comes with it, I will be happy.

I hope they don't make like 539 versions of windows 7. Like they did with Vista, Vista Home, Vista Business, Vista Todler, Vista tartar sauce, Vista Ultimate, Vista Premium, Vista For Dummies, Vista for Fishermen, Vista for Astronauts, Vista for Engineers, Vista for Belly Dancers, Vista for Car Mechanics, Vista for Retards, Vista for Ballmer, Vista for Athelets Foot, Vista for Cold and Sinus, Vista for Mad Cow Disease, Vista for Bed, Vista for Economy, Vista for Groundhogs, Vista for Pelicans, Vista for Carpenters, Vista for people who drive a honda civic, Vista for people who like mustard, Vista for people who drive on the right side of the road, But you know what man, all in all, I like Vista. :D (BTW I bought Vista for men who wear there sunglasses at night)

If the taskbar is the only part you hate about Windows 7 you should read on how to revert it back to the older style taskbar.

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2339248,00.asp

I am currently using Windows 7 Beta and the performance and usability improvements over Vista and XP are huge. I personally love the new taskbar and it makes mutitasking a lot easier. Windows 7 also starts up and shuts down a LOT faster than Vista. Another nice thing is that when the desktop first appears after login, it is not very long at all before the system becomes usable. In benchmarks, 7 performs similarly to its predecessors but everything is quicker and snappier when in windows. Everything from opening new programs to copying files just seems faster.

    I suggest you elaborate.

The little add ons are insignificant.

The increase in performance doesn't matter that much on a powerful computer...

The general consensus, according to what I've been reading and hearing for the last few weeks, is that people will be willing to upgrade based on the pricing. If it's too high, then there are a lot of people who say that it will not be worth it to upgrade. If the pricing is right, and I'm sure hoping it is, a lot of people will be willing to move to the new OS.

I'm excited about it myself, but I am certainly not going to pay a ridiculous price for it, especially not when I plan on getting a new computer really soon. It just wouldn't be worth it, IMHO. Microsoft seems like they did a really good job with it, though. It will be very hard to stay away regardless of pricing, but I will if I cannot afford to pay some outlandish fee.

It's not going to flop at all. Although personally, I see absolutely NO reason why anyone currently happy with Vista would be remotely interested in Windows 7.

I'm a great believer in replacing something when it stops doing what you want to do, or getting the latest version if it makes you much more efficient.

Windows 7 does neither. It's a point upgrade from Vista, so Vista is FAR from obsolete, and it doesn't make checking my e-mails, using the internet, making documents, editing pictures etc.. any more efficient or any more secure than Vista.

I couldn't wait to jump to Vista from XP for exactly one reason, the MASSIVE security upgrade. What is there to make me get Windows 7?

    PASS.

Are you still using 512MB of RAM out of some necessity or just trying to push old hardware to the edge of it's usefulness? In the USA a gig of laptop RAM costs about as much as a meal at a diner. By the time Win7 is final and released, it will probably cost more along the lines of a McDonalds Value Meal.

Why are you still on 512MB of RAM, or a laptop that only supports that much?

If XP users disliked the eye candy of Vista wait 'till Win7 comes out... Eye candy galore!! Best thing will be the touch screen interface and I believe it's the future of computing.

    Hmm....
touchscreens make me want to stab the screen with my Parker or Diplomat biro...
(Nice steel casing - should go through)

Under certain conditions touchscreens can be handy - but overal they are more of a nuissance as far as I'm aware.

Fingerprins all over the place, don't register what you click/tap when it should...

touchscreens are all hip and will go away from computing quick after being not that cool hip iphone thingy again. they exist since years and never really got the future. reasons are clear: they are not really that useful for most computing work.

but it's nice to have it as another option, depending on the work. but they can't replace keyboard, mouse, touchpad, orismouse (you know it), pen, controllers, joypads, joysticks, midi controllers for all the tasks they fit.

once screens get ordinary haptic repsonce equal to what a keyboard and mouse can (and that will take a long time i'd guess), i'd start thinking about using touchscreens for daily work. till then, no chance..

what most xp users never get: the eye candy actually enhances system performance (this is true in vista, too). if you disable it, you disable hw acceleration, and the system has to do the gui on cpu. if you enable it, it doesn't have to work on the cpu that much.

I am not sure that I want a touch screen. I don't like to see oily fingerprints all over the place. I am very particular with the cleanliness of my screen that I don't allow anybody to touch my screen at all.
