I've been quite contentedly running Windows 8 on my MacBook Pro. One thing I'd like to know is if 8 will receive the same level of support, including security and other patches, as 8.1. MS doesn't list 8 and 8.1 separately on its lifecycle fact sheet page, so I have to assume that both versions will be supported equally for the foreseeable future. However, I would appreciate any insight as to whether or not this is true, if anyone actually know for sure.

if you check out the actual lifecycle table, W8 service pack support will continue only to 2016. i would expect that security patches come under extended support, which is the same as W8.1, but i don't know. so i guess it depends entirely on the type of update.

Windows 8 support ends in two years. M$ wants to force all 8 users to update to 8.1 eventually.

    windows 8 support ending expiry

    Windows 8.1 Support Lifecycle Policy

I say just stick with 8. That's what I'm doing. There are no must-have new features in 8.1 worth updating for. Performance in games and applications is no faster than in 8. In fact, I view it overall as a step backwards with all the feature omissions/removals, deceptive practices aimed at furthering the M$ agenda in the mobile space, and further b4stardization of the traditional PC power user's OS. Plus there is the mouse lag in games that still hasn't been fully fixed.

By the time M$ stops supporting 8, Windows 9 or whatever will be out, and of course there is always Windows 7 to fall back on.
