I bought a Dell notebook from Ebay which has a Windows 8 Pro sticker on the bottom but is running Windows 10. In the activation information, it reads "Windows is activated using your organisation's activation service". Does this mean that the licence does not belong to me/the machine I bought - and could potentially expire at any time?

That happens when you install Windows 10 using a Volume License key which is meant for organizations. What I assume has happened is the reseller installed Windows 10 and entered a volume license key and used the KMS Activation method (which is not legal) to activate Windows rather than doing the proper upgrade from 8 to 10 which will make that Windows 8 key a valid Windows 10 upgrade key that won't expire and can be used to re-activate on that same machine as many times as you want.

I would contact the reseller and get a partial refund or just go back to Windows 8.

To find out your Windows 10 Product key that's injected in your computer's motherboard:

Download RWEverything and launch it as admin

Click on ACCESS > ACPI Tables

Then go to the MSDM Tab:

Thanks for the reply. Just to check (regarding the last part of your response), in my case I cannot extract a Windows 10 licence key from the motherboard as the key on the board is likely to be Windows 8?

Yes what I meant you can use that key to install Windows 8 if you want to otherwise you may need to purchase a Windows 10 key

I'd personally consider it a blessing that it came with Windows 8 Pro, which you can use Windows Update to get to Windows 8.1 (Pro?), rather than muck around with Windows 10 which has been a nightmare for many people for over 2 years now.

Hopefully the vendor didn't sell the Windows 8 Pro key to someone else... I'd try to install Windows 8 Pro right away and see if it activates, otherwise use the Windows 10 and Windows 8 Pro license issues as a reason to return, and/or complain to Ebay to get your money and shipping charges returned.

nope. I already looked into that. I wanted to change the built in key that I have for Windows 10 Home and insert my Windows 10 Pro key but you can't. If I install Windows regularly, it will install Home then I'd have to upgrade it to Pro since it won't even give me a choice as it will pick up the Home key from the BIOS. So this is my workaround to install Pro from the get go:

How to select Windows Home or Pro when installing Windows 10

Upgraded means it registered your W8 key as the w10 keys so if you the future you wipe it clean for clean W10 install you input your W8 key to do a digital activiation. You didn't get a W10 Key your W8 key is digital registration of W10.
