Hey everyone, I'm a mac user but I am currently studying to complete my MCSE and CCNA so I have decided to pick up a Dell Inspiron 1520. I was just wondering what the following configuration would be like with Windows Vista.

The model that I am looking at ships with Windows Vista Home Premium, Im also wondering will this version of Windows Vista allow me to join the laptop to a domain (when I am at work)?

    Heres the config:

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 Processor (2.2GHz,800MHz,4MB L2 cache)

OPERATING SYSTEM - Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium - English

COLOUR CHOICE - Jet Black Colour with Matte Finish & 2.0mp camera

LCD - 15.4" Widescreen WXGA (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife™

    MEMORY- 4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]

HARD DRIVE - 160GB (7200RPM) SATA Hard Drive

    GRAPHICS CARD - nVidia® GeForce™ Go 8400M GS with 128MB DDR2 dedicated graphic memory

OPTICAL DRIVE - Fixed Internal 8X DVD /-RW Drive including Software

    PRIMARY BATTERY - Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)

    Accessories
BLUETOOTH - Dell™ Wireless 355 Bluetooth 2.0 Module (up to 3Mbps) with Enhanced Data Rate
    WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY - Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-Card

    wifi catcher
    5-in-1 card reader
    Microsoft® Works 8.0 - English
English Documentation with English/Irish Power Cord
Resource DVD - (Diagnostics & Drivers) - Vista
    90W AC Adapter
    56.6k V.92 Capable Internal Modem & Adapter

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Never buy 4 GB of RAM from Dell. If this is for professional work, go with a Vostro 1500 and load up XP Pro instead of Vista.

Dell charges quite a premium to upgrade RAM from 2 to 4GB. I know because I've done my homework but still had to get the RAM from them since for some reason I couldn't get 2GB RAM sticks locally. You could save around 100 euros if you decided to upgrade the RAM yourself.

I agree with the others. It is quite easy to upgrade RAM so save yourself money and buy RAM afterwards from Newegg or something. This configuration will run Vista without a problem. If you are going to be gaming, I suggest that you choose Nvidia 8600m GT instead of the 8400. Personally I would not go for the Jet Black finish on the Dell, because it will attract a lot of fingerprints. Any other color is OK i believe. :)

vista will run amazing on that the only thing is if that operating system is 32 bit it wont see all 4 gigs of that ram. you would need 64 bit

Look into Vista Business or Ultimate if you are concerned about easily joining a Domain.

I may have worded that post incorrectly. You can join a workgroup with basic/premium, but not a true domain.
