Some laptop comes with built-in recovery partition, for example hp.
Will the windows 7 upgrade disc from hp comes with the recovery partition?
So after using the windows 7 upgrade.. next time, to recovery from the hdd's recovery partition..
It will load windows 7 and followed by the bloatware installed by the manufacturer..
Or the upgrade disc is universal, regardless of manufacturer, i.e. direct from MS. only contain the windows 7 OS?
So, when performing recovery to factory condition, it will still load the originally OS, i.e. vista/xp and the user will still have to install the windows 7 upgrade again?

No, the recovery partition is specifically from your manufacturer and is pretty much static, unless you delete it altogether. The Windows 7 disk may have your OEM's label on it, but it's still a generic Windows disk.
If you don't format your recovery partition or otherwise delete it, and install Windows 7 on your main/OS partition, then the recovery stuff will be the same as it always has, and if you use it, it will install Vista. -

when you upgrade to Windows 7, you will still have you Vista recover partition unless you choose to delete it, you will not get a Windows 7 recover partition.
I use Acronis True Image 10 which i got for free, there are a few other free backup software, but i dont know them of the top of my head, there was a free version the other week. -
Thanks for the replies..

If you do upgrade to win 7, your license for vista is no longer usable right? How would this affect "recovering" your computer with the original recovery software ( Vista ) ? -
What is the 100mb partition that Windows 7 creates when installed used for?
-
I would ask in a separate thread. -
I was thinking it had something to do with recovery but it turns out to be for bitlocker.

What I don't know... if you install Win7, would that overwrite boot sector and render recovery system nonfunctional? I have no pc available to test it myself. I'm wondering this because sometimes even clean installing Vista did break the recovery system. That's why it's always wise to make recovery discs before doing anything else -
Just wondering though, how does one make a recovery disk? Or better yet, is there a step by step guide to make a recovery disk or a recovery partition? -
Acer has the "Acer Empower" Gadget on the desktop (at least in XP systems it had) where was the system recovery tab. In that tab, one option was DVD burn.
HP generally had their creation software in the start menu.
Fujitsu(-Siemens) some models have software in the start menu like HP but some models create the discs in recovery mode itself (Accessible by pressing the magic X button in the boot, cant remember if it was F11 or something else).
All those three brands have huge pop-up warnings every now and then, "You haven't yet created the recovery disks, click here to do them now". If such function hasn't yet been disabled, just follow the instructions on screen -
I appreciate the answer KLF, but was thinking more of making a recovery partition after installing win 7 on my computer. Would that be possible?
-
That would be possible in theory. All you need is the same tools manufacturers use
One example is http://www.acronis.com/oem/products/pc/
I'd love to get my hands on such softwareI haven't seen or heard of free alternatives either.
Of course you could do it manually. Divide hdd in 2 partitions, install Win7 normally and update drivers / OS as you need. Install all the software you use (the bloatware). Use Sysprep if you want.
Then boot with USB stick / CD that has Ghost or similar image software and make an image to the second partition. The only problem with that approach is, you need the boot media (usb-stick, cd) with the software to "recover" system. It ain't pretty but it works -
Darn, I was hoping there was free software that could do that. Thanks for the replies though Acronis.
-
Free software can do it. Try Macrium free. It has all the features of Acronis... it just is slightly slower I find.
-
That Macrium looks like normal disc copy / imaging software? I can't find anything about creating recovery partitions in the feature lists?
-
This is a shorter way to make an OEM recovery partition
