So, Windows 7 is closer and closer to launch.
My view is, Windows 7 is totally unnecessary, but it is a must have.
How?
Let me explain:
Windows Vista is not a bad OS, actually, It's by far (currently) the most responsive, reliable, safe, and durable OS Microsoft has ever released, but this is the case only now, two years after release.
When it was released the compatibility issues, and people's thickness made it impossible to like it, or understand UAC, and Microsoft's lack of work to explain the innovative way in which Vista handles memory, and all the work that is done behind the scene like Superfetch, ReadyBoost, Auto Defragment, Defender, smart memory management, made people think its a resource hog.
Surely it's not gonna run as fast as XP on a 1 gig stick, but surely it was time to move on with the low amount of memory? sooner rather than later people would have had to, with games becoming extremely demanding.
Add to that the fact that over 80% of people are no more than casual users of computers, and not exactly experts in the OS world, they just repeat after someone who they think of as an expert.
When someone says Vista is a bad, unsafe, annoying resource hog, so says everybody, because they follow, instead of looking at facts and understanding how the product works.
Now, for those who are enjoying Vista, 7 is totally unnecessary.
BUT, XP (and older?) users, 7 is a must. Forget all the stuff you read about Vista, as I explained why its already good(not bad).
7 is even better, with lesser intrusive UAC, faster performance, and probably even safer.
Even if none of this was true and it was a cloned Vista with a name change, you should still get it, because it will be at least similar to the current Vista, with all problems fixed.
So, 7 is a must, to restore Microsoft's public image, and to let those who are stuck with their XP bubble (no offense, everyone has his reasons) move on.
But, it should be a TOTAL skip for those who are managing things right in Vista.

Will you want/do effort to obtain a legit copy of Windows 7?
----
No
I am fine with, and have never had any real problems with Windows Vista. Also, in the past I have never had to buy a retail copy of Windows because it came with every single computer that I purchased.
The only thing that would change my mind is if I go to the library or an internet cafe and I see that Windows 7 is really that much better than Vista, and if I wouldn't rather buy a piece of hardware, like an LCD monitor larger than the 14" I have right now..
I'm pretty sure my next 'large' computer related purchase is going to come down to something like Windows 7 Ultimate, vs an LCD TV.. -
I'll definitely buy a legit copy. I've downloaded what I thought was a legit copy of XP Pro only because I had a legit key but did not want to spend $135 for another copy. It caused all kinds of problems.
What i'll probably do is buy another laptop with W7 already installed but if I don't go that route then yes i'll fork over the money but only for W7 Premium. -

I plan on buying Windows 7 as soon as I can. From my experiences with the beta, I agree with the notion that it's "Vista done right".
-
Looking like Windows 7 FTW for me this time. Microsoft has done something right
cheers ... -
Here we go again!
XP sucks Vista rules.
Vista sucks 7 rules.
I'll go for anything that's an improvement and plays well with the apps I use. For me, W7 will be an improvement. -
I'm real happy with Vista, and surely won't rush out to get a copy, although I will in the end. Need to build a new desktop first and will probably christen it with 7.
-
will get 7 as soon as possible

I"ll get the legit W7 RC. After it expires, i'll probably have a new laptop with W7 in it.
-
As far as I can tell no - why should I bother?
Vista runs fine for me - and installing an OS is just a hassle - I'm happy Vista is currently running fineThe longer it does that the better
(knock on wood)
I will most likely get free access to Windows 7 vis MSDN - so I may reconsider, but as it currently stands I don't think I'll change to Windows 7 unless I buy a new laptop which will be a few years from now anyway. -
I am going to stick with my Dell XPS m1530 with Vista for another year or so - and then switch to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I hate Windows...

i'm sticking with vista till i get win7 for free on some new machine. won't pay for it.
better pay for an ssd, you get more performance gain and suddenly vista is as fast as win7 on the ssd. not worth any cent, espencially not for the taskbar.
other than that, i'll take any licence of any os i get for free. if i don't use it myself, i'll find someone who can use it. at least removing all the illegal xp's still spread around everywhere. -
Wish I could say with certainty, but right now, it looks like I'll be stuck with my 6 year-old pokey little VAIO, which cannot run anything other than XP (can't do .Vista, Win7 or linux (too many proprietary kludges for the purists at penguin, Inc. to deal with)), for the forseeable future.
Oh well, at least I won't have to lose any sleep worrying over whether I should go with .Vista or Win7. -
If Microsoft offers it free as an extra to Vista Ultimate users, I will.
MS hasn't delivered anything regarding the so-called Ultimate promises, so here is a chance to redeem themselves. (hello Redmond, anyone listening....?)
I like Win7 though. Will use it on my next notebook in a (couple of) year(s).Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
OP, what a nicely and concise way of expressing what Vista really is. Big props.
I like Vista, and, well, I'm not sure if I would pay for two 7 licenses to upgrade my desktop and laptop. Maybe one for my laptop. -
would like to get W7..
but the big worry is whether i shall wait and watch the world and get to know the pros n cons of the new baby..
or just go with the wind..?? -
I generally liked the beta, but not enough to justify paying the likely retail price for Windows. Right now XP is doing everything I want it to, so I don't see any reason to switch. And compatibility/performance, while better than Vista for me, was still worse than with XP in Windows 7. So the improved features aren't worth the cost of worse compatibility and performance, especially with monetary cost factored in. Most of the features are available in third-party programs anyways, if a bit less smoothly implemented. I was using XP 85% of the time when I had XP and Win7Beta installed, so spending money on Win7 doesn't make much sense.
So I'll keep using XP either until I get another computer in 2-3 years, or until Windows 8 comes out. Once one of those events happen I'll re-evaluate and decide whether to stick with XP/Server 2003 for another 2-3 years after that or not. Although I may try the Win7 RC out of curiosity over XP Mode and the next version of Virtual PC. But so long as XP works well for me, I see no reason to switch.
Certainly Windows 7 will be a better choice for many people, but for my purposes and what I run, XP works better. -
I want to see if people will downgrade from Win7 to Vista.
-
i will obtain a copy of the RC as soon as it's available, and it will be my primary OS until this machine is replaced this summer. after that, i'll use Vista Premium on the new machine until the windows 7 final release, and i'll use my free upgrade to obtain 7 and never look back
-
I'm sorry but the OP here is just not true at all.
Anyone who owns a laptop that was sold today, or before today and is is happy with XP while unhappy with Vista should not find much if any improvement in 7.
Windows 7 is nearly exactly the same as the Vista kernel and as such faces the same inefficiency issues that Vista does. If anything it has recently been shown that Windows 7 takes even more cycles to complete the same task as Vista, meaning a further slowdown. One could argue that a lot of the changes made from XP to Vista are 'nessesery', but it highly depends on the the person's goals and needs.
Vista and Windows 7 will be faster with the right hardware. However, unless your computer is running around 16 cores, with significant (>50%) usage you won't get any improvement. Vista makes improvements to SMP processing scalability which is its only way to improve performance. Unless your processing a lot of data that means that being less efficient cannot be overcome.
Will Windows 7 be faster then Vista? It might be by a few percent, but not much really. And as such you probably won't find it matching, nevertheless exceeding XP. The reason XP will die is not because anything is ever better then it overall, it will because we need to address more hardware and the support for XP just isn't there. The same reason most people move to Vista. They get it with their computer, and they have to run it in order to get use of their hardware (RAM). -

I love Vista and have loved it since SP1 came out. I am enjoying it much more than I did XP as coming from being a Mac user to XP it was a horrible change over and XP never changed like the Mac OS always does so it got stale fast, looked and ran horribly and clunky. Moving to Vista (mind you only SP1 as before that it was crap) was a welcomed experience to be on a new OS with much more features and a MUCH better GUI. I have not looked back since I went Vista SP1 and I tell you when Windows 7 SP1 comes out I will obtain a legit copy of that operating system and never look back. I have heard such good things about Windows 7 and how it improves a lot upon Vista nd runs better on current hardware so its kind of a no brainer to move from Vista to Windows 7.
Thats my 9.6 cent anyways. -

no, i will not.
i will get windows 7 when i'm getting new computer which will already have windows 7 installed or building new custom computer, cant be bothered, or want to waste my money in upgrading.
hopefully SP2 or SP3 will fix the vista annoying UAC (which i found to be too intrusive) and my computer's sleep problem (about 20% of the time; while entering sleep, system crash and auto-reboot) -

As ridiculous as it seems, this is a main selling point for 7, and Microsoft will punish those who do not upgrade.
After one, two or god knows how many years, they might consider changing how UAC works under vista. -

I do want to get Windows 7, but not right away. Windows Vista is running very well for me now, negating any real need to bump up to W7 anytime soon.
