Hey guys. So I just updated to Win 10. Not sure if I like it or not yet, but I ran into a few minor problems.

So as I tried to log in for the first time using my usual fingerprint swipe, I got this message: "Couldn't recognise that fingerprint. Make sure you've set up your fingerprint in Windows Hello".

Hmm, I thought it should just work as it always did, but okay. I looked into this Windows Hello, a search just redirected me to the Sign-in Options, where before setting up Windows Hello I had to set up a PIN. Okay. Done that, I try to add my fingerprint to the Windows Hello thingy, but it tells me that I've already reached the maximum of 10 fingerprints on my account (since I did already have all 10 fingers scanned before this).

How do I make Windows 10 recognise my fingerprint swipes as Win 8.1 did?

Hello Jaybee83, thanks for the help. I just checked but there's no option to do that. I can only try to add more fingerprints or cancel out of the program.

Shouldn't I have some other application on my computer that handles fingerprints? I remember I had a program for the fingerprint reader on my previous 2 laptops.. Now I've been looking but I can't find anything...

Yes, same. So I have no idea how to re-assing my fingerprint swipes now, or just let Windows Hello use the current ones already in the system... google doesn't seem to have much on this topic at the moment. Hopefully something comes up...

stupid question: have u recently thoroughly cleaned out ur fingerprint reader? :D

also, i have the option to reset/remove windows hello fingerprints and start anew. also didnt look like it has a 10 finger limit anymore, as opposed to win8.1....

I didn't clean it but it seems fairly clean and it always worked well without problems. Can you please tell me where to reset the fingerprints? I couldn't find it :/

What sort of fingerprint scanner do you have? I have a Clevo laptop with one and while I use it regularly, I do often have to swipe a few times before it lets me in (on both win 8 and win 10). I get the "couldn't recognize fingerprint" message, although I also get the "use a longer swipe" one as well. I seem to be getting it a little more regularly with windows 10, so perhaps the sensitivity was increased a little bit in windows 10.

I have a Clevo P771ZM. In Device Manager under Biometric devices it says EgisTec ES603, I guess that's the model. I also had to swipe more than once before, but now with Windows 10 I tried swiping carefully so many times and it never worked.

type 'fingerprint' in your search bar and you will be taken to the 'setup fingerprint sign in' on accounts settings. you can then enroll your fingerprint there.

windows 8.1 had the fingerprint lockscreen while 10 has the fingerprint lockscreen AND account sign in. when you turn on your computer or wake from sleep in w10, you actually sign in to both. the major difference between the two is that w10 sign in allows you to sign in to apps, programs and websites that support it while lockscreen is just that.

problem is, you just cant disable lockscreen in w10 and youll have to use gpedit or regedit to do so to avoid the redundancy.

    Thanks @trvelbug , but that's what I've already tried:

I guess I'll have to wait for @jaybee83 to point me to that reset/remove fingerprint swipe from the database and re-add them.

you shouldve stumbled upon it actually, its in the settings app right where u add new fingerprints for windows hello. next to the button for adding fingerprints is another button for removing/resetting them. at least in my case....

I checked and I do have the same fingerprint scanner - it is a bit sketchy, but has been better after adding a fingerprint. I had a look in the menu you both linked and I don't recall seeing the "Remove" button previously, but I did see it today when I went in.

It's interesting that you have "Set up" rather than "Add another" and "Remove". That seems to imply that no fingerprints exist, perhaps try adding one again.

@ethon21 , but I can't add another one, it says that I reached the maximum of 10 already (which is right).
Ahhh damn, looks like I'm screwed.. there must be a way to reset it by editing some registry entry or something... but no idea. I also spent a lot of time on google but couldn't find anything helpful about this :(

It sounds like a fairly significant bug. I don't recall logging in successfully with a fingerprint prior to adding a new one, but I do remember that it recognized the old fingerprints when I was trying to add the new one. This leaves you in a weird place where you can't set it up with a new one since it thinks you're capped at 10.

It is surprising that it's so hard to remove the fingerprint information. Have you tried removing the drivers for the fingerprint scanner and rebooting? I'm trying to look around for options as well, but it's not really clear to me whether the info is stored on your computer or in the cloud with your microsoft account. Will let you know if I turn anything up.

Yes, I tried it, but same thing. After reinstalling the drivers, it still says I have 10 fingerprints already scanned and doesn't let me add more, nor remove them.

I also checked their official website, hoping to find drivers for Windows 10, but didn't find any drivers at all.

Also googled "EgisTec ES603 Windows 10", but couldn't find anything useful. :/

By the way, thanks a lot for the help guys, even if it's not working.

Thanks, but I would rather not do a system reset. Ah, nevermind I guess. I'll keep an eye on it to see if it the near future they fix this problem with some Windows 10 updates. If you guys hear anything new, let me know. And thanks everyone for the support! Great community :)
