    I'm using a Dell M4500 with win 7 enterprise.

Every now and then, the system will boot up with a black background and/or will boot up with only generic tray icons on the left side of the task bar (icons I had pinned). Windows is still functional when this happens. It typically takes several reboots to restore things to normal.

Any ideas as to what is happening and how to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Harvey

Is your laptop on a domain?

Yes. And it is locked down - I have very limited user rights. I am also currently connecting through a VPN via a home network.

You should really be talking to your IS people!

It sounds like its not able to fetch your user profile from the domain so is using a default windows one.

If you work remotely a lot it may be worth setting it up slightly differently - but obviously that's not something you'll be able to change.

I have contacted the IS people. My login is via a smartcard -some profile data may be stored there as well as on the machine since I usually can boot up correctly prior to manually starting the VPN session. I guess it's possible that they change things around periodically and then push them onto my machine via the VPN during the prior session - this is what I want to check with the IS people.

Also, an update on the situation: I received a notification that Symantec AV was disabled. I tried to enable it but could not (no user rights). But I did do a definitions update via the VPN. Surprisingly, a subsequent reboot came up correctly. Go figure!

    Thanks,
    Harvey

Unfortunately anything anyone here will tell you to do will either: a) not work because of restricted rights, or b) get you in trouble with IS. It's not worth it.

Hang on.. you're using a companies computer?

On top of that, is it really important that you update the AV amongst other things? It's IS's problem if all of the computers they have get infected with a virus, why are you bothering? I sort of fail to see how any of this is important, except for the fact that you are losing a bit of time not having everything where you want.
